NEW IMPROVED TEMP TRACK LIST

aka WHEN THE TEMP TRACK IS NO LONGER TEMPORARY: THE EXPANDED DIRECTOR'S CUT

By Scott Bettencourt

In last week's column, I presented an extremely incomplete list of films from the last few decades which featured score cues from earlier films in their release versions, typically holdovers from the temp track (excluding films deliberately referencing earlier classic scores, like the many familiar film themes heard throughout Madagascar, for example, or even the inspired use of Ennio Morricone's Navajo Joe theme in Election). I asked readers for further examples of this trend, and received so many replies that I feel like George Bailey being saved by the generosity of the good folks of Bedford Falls. Thank you, oh readers, for saving me from having to prepare a Wednesday column that involves actual writing. Bless you all.

And since it was a claim by Washington Post film critic Ann Hornaday that You, Me and Dupree (a last minute rescore by Theodore Shapiro) featured (uncredited) cues from Damon Gough's About a Boy score, it is only fitting that we should hear from Daniel Schweiger and Andrew Silver, who were the temp score editors for Dupree, as they set the record straight:

As the guys responsible for the "Dupree" temp, we just want to correct you that while music from "About a Boy" was used in the temp, none of Badly Drawn Boy's (Damon Gough) score is in the final version of the film. As far as Ann Hornaday's remarks go, that's her opinion. In previews the "Dupree" temp music received very high marks, and while it clearly influenced Theodore Shapiro's score (which he had precious little time to write, due to the directors' decision) we believe that Teddy captured the spirit of, rather than copied, the temp score.

As music editors who specialize in temp tracks, we both strongly agree that original music is always the best choice, rather than putting cues from the temp into the final soundtrack. Our job is to find music that will help both the filmmakers and the composers to find the best emotional path in creating a unique score, but sometimes the hard creative decisions involved in the ever-important process of test screenings and post-production dictate otherwise, here in the case of "You, Me, and Dupree".

Thankfully, we have as yet to receive a letter from Steely Dan.

Sincerely,

Andrew Silver
Daniel Schweiger

***** reader James believes that it was Howard's music for Dying Young, not Dave, which was tracked into Picture Perfect; I recognized Dave cues when I saw the film, but am less familiar with the Dying Young score. Does anyone have any confirmation that Dying Young pieces were used as well?
