The latest release from Intrada is a pet project of the label's mogul Doug Fake, a complete, two-disc version of Alex North's powerful score for director John Ford's final Western epic, 1964's CHEYENNE AUTUMN, starring Richard Widmark, Carroll Baker, Karl Malden, Edward G. Robinson, James Stewart, and those noted Native American actors, Sal Mineo and Ricardo Montalban. The Intrada set features the complete 79-minute score as well as more than 30 minutes of extras.


Quartet has announced their currently planned slate of releases for October, including a five-disc collection of Alberto Iglesias film music and a disc pairing Philippe Sarde's score for Jerry Schatzberg's REUNION with Sarde's unused score for the director's MISUNDERSTOOD, starring Gene Hackman and Henry Thomas.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

THE WALK - Alan Silvestri

"What's fascinating is how Zemeckis (assisted by ace cinematography from Dariusz Wolski and Alan Silvestri's majestic score) so firmly inserts viewers into Philippe's head that the walk itself is far from the film's most nerve-rattling moment. Indeed, the longer it goes on, it becomes more and more peaceful, especially after all the tension in the sequences leading up to it, which combine all the stress of trying to get the wire in place in time with the added 'fun' of everyone occasionally dangling from the edge of a skyscraper."

"No film since 'Gravity' has so demanded to be seen in 3-D on the biggest possible screen. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's inherent charm makes Petit far more palatable than he seems in real life, getting you to believe that he could assemble a crew to pull off this illegal stunt. The second act of the classically structured 'The Walk' plays like a heist film, focusing on the gathering of that crew and planning every detail of what Petit refers to as 'the coup,' complete with a score that evokes caper films as 'Topkapi' and 'The Thomas Crown Affair'. But the film's money shot is Petit on the wire in the third act, and Zemeckis the visual stylist does not disappoint. (Be ready for your palms to sweat.) 'The Walk' also manages to commemorate the Twin Towers without getting maudlin or even directly referencing 9/11, which may be the neatest stunt of all."

"Much like 'Flight,' which used classic rock to dubious effect, music isn’t really Zemeckis’ forte (he has the musical taste, it’s the execution that’s lacking). Paris is musically epitomized by cliched whimsical accordions (the equivalent of 'jazz hands') and the retro-funk employed in the prep sequences is way more banal 'Starsky & Hutch' remake than it is 'Ocean’s Eleven' cool. But when the main thrust of the heist movie takes off, 'The Walk” begins its ascent and your stress level may fly off the charts while you stare down imminent death. As the playful, sometimes silly tenor gives way and the film begins to bloom, 'The Walk' dazzles with a (mostly) conflict-free 25 minutes of Petit just walking the wire (itself an unconventional ending if there ever was one). The score suddenly takes a walking-on-air poignancy and there’s a breathtaking exhilaration experienced by witnessing Petit’s feat -- the VFX are so grand it’s easy to forget you’re watching a virtual 100% CG-created world. "But first he’s got to case the joint -- 14 years after 9/11, we are apparently ready as a society for a montage in which foreign spies suss out the security flaws of the World Trade Center while jazzy caper music plays -- and enlist more coconspirators. And finally there’s the walk itself, in all its simultaneous wonder and terror. Chances are you’ve seen a hundred costumed heroes leap from roof to roof in hundreds of movies, to the point that it’s like watching a pedestrian hurdle a puddle when it happens. It’s never been like this. What 'Man on Wire' did with black-and-white stills and Erik Satie’s 'Gymnopedie No. 1,' Zemeckis does with 3-D, CGI, and broad-stroke magic is happening Alan Silvestri cues. And yet it’s the one moment in the film when more really is more."

Though Zemeckis follows a more linear trajectory -- spending the better part of the pokey first hour in Paris, where Philippe falls for street musician Annie (saucer-eyed Canadian actress Charlotte Le Bon) and enlists her photographer friend Jean-Louis (Clement Sibony) -- 'The Walk' shares the white-knuckle sense that the World Trade Center performance must be planned and executed with the precision of a bank heist, a sensibility reflected in Alan Silvestri’s light-string score, which alternates between insistent and inspiring as the suspense level requires."
