I absolutely LOVE IT!!
A new James Horner score, 5 years after his death, is a gift from the heavens.
I can't imagine any fans of JH not loving the sh!t outta this.
Everything is in place. The borrowings. The re-use.
But also the beautiful melody. Exquisite orchestration. Attention to drama. The emotion!!
For me, this trumps the AK music, just in how much more expressive and emotional the music IS.
The AK score is pleasant, but very much in line with more modern scoring sensibilities.
For me, Horners score is timeless. And the voice and choir is sublime, in relation to the story.
What a birthday gift this has been smile

Could not agree with you more! Thanks Kev, that was a great read! Happy Birthday!!!

Hear Hear! I am with you guys totally! Happy Birthday KeV! It is a gift to you and us all from the Maestro!

I love it more and more with each listen. That funeral ending is the total genius of Horner doing what he did best to etch a cinematic moment into your heart and soul and memory. God Bless him.

Abel's score is nice and indeed no disrespect to him. He's a talented composer. I just totally prefer the score of James Horner for Carlo's ROMEO AND JULIET. I love Carlo's visuals with Horner's music.

After seeing this interview with Carlo, I can understand better why he ultimately rejected Horner's music. I just get a feeling from his personality that he and Horner may have not totally connected artistically. Just a gut feeling when two talented artists work together, but for some reason are on a different level from each other. Perhaps Mike, KeV and others understand me?

It's great just having both scores now, for EVERYONE to enjoy!

Zoob, it looks like it was more of a producer’s decision. Jon Broxton goes into some detail here, it’s a pretty wild read!

Okay, thanks Mike. That accounting of what happened happily gives me new respect for director Carlo and composer Abel. It was the producers and those two test screening audiences that "nailed" Horner's coffin, so to speak. That sounds horrible. Sorry.

I'm glad to hear Carlo loved Horner's music and am sorry that Abel was put in that weird position, with the producers not being completely truthful to both him and Horner. I am touched to hear that if he had known the truth, that out of respect for Horner he would have stepped down. Amazing. The behind the scenes story, would make a great movie. Almost like the classic 2001 Alex North / Stanley Kubrick thing. Amazing.

Has anyone done a R&J with period instruments? Would be one way of stepping out of Rota's shadow—which neither Horner nor Korzeniowski manage to do.

To add: similarly, perhaps Zefferelli's shadow has kept Brannagh humbled (the rare case), because Doyle's take on this classic tragedy would surely be welcome.

I agree with all of that. I love it. Sure it sounds like a zillion other Horners, but dammit, as far as I'm concerned it is fantastic. It needs a legit release. Really. Of course now it'll be downloaded and shared and that'll probably kill any chance of a release ( if there ever was a chance ) .

But damn, I'm loving the sh*t out of this smile

What a lazy score. Even for Horner's self plagiarism standards.

Using Sneakers again, a score for a modern computer spy movie, into a Shakespearean enviroment is just ludicrous.

It is understandable why it was rejected.

I will never figure why Horner, being such a well trained and talented musician, CHOOSE to destroy his own work with such shamefull self-rip offs...

Very sad.

Shameful remarks by all! Same all shit remarks from the same people on this site; going on way before Horner died.
All of you that made the same negative remarks about him when he was alive.
Should be grateful we finally have new music to listen to. Tired of the bitching & criticism of Horner on this site for multiple years.
Should be thankful for this NEW MUSIC !!

No one. I could, however, ask you the same question. People will express their opinions on a board such as this, and some won't like every work by James Horner.

Same question as you . I have your Rosenthal that you seem to want reissued. Why do you want that? Purchased why back years ago. No big deal to me.

I've listened to this new Horner score about 5 times since I got it and it just gets better and better with each subsequent play.
It just oozes heart and emotion.
I love it when he drops in that little piano refrain also heard in Deep Impact. It's like a visit from an old friend.
So glad this was shared with the world.
Music like this shouldn't be hidden away or go unheard.
And if one of our labels is or was prepping this, I will be buying a copy of your release too.

Totally agree KeV. I can't get the main theme out of my head! The final funeral cue featuring it, is amazing.

Where do I sign up to purchase the legitimate release of this wonderful score?

I have to agree with KeV-McG and zooba. It's a fine "Horneresque" score and I'm so glad to have it available, even posthumously.

Look - the director tells the composer what he wants. From the director's video clip above, THIS director is involved in EVERYTHING. I presume he was involved intimately with the music and told Horner EXACTLY what he wanted. If Horner wrote the score that he was asked to write, he might get hired again. It seems pretty obvious to me that Horner was instructed to write the derivative score he wrote (yes, I heard the SNEAKERS-mode scoring, too) to make the director happy. And quite happy he was, according to Jon Broxton's column noted in a previous post. But then "the suits" from Swarovski messed with the director's and the composer's visions and interfered by using some goofy test audience competition with Horner's score versus Korzeniowski's and the latter won the vote.

The Korzeniowski score was also well-done. BUT, I haven't seen this film, so I can't comment on how either score matches the film. Leonard Maltin's book review remarks that it's "subtle as a sledge hammer." Hmmm.

Yes, I’d definitely purchase a copy too. It must stand a good chance since the film wasn’t exactly a major hit so the studio shouldn’t be too concerned about an “inspired by...” album. Let’s hope this happens at some point.
