I feel like an apostate from the true faith, but after loading the whole set onto my iPod, I'm having a lovely time just putting it on shuffle. Find it a much more enjoyable way to hear some of the TOS tracks, especially the short ones, mixed into TAS, TNG and other TLAs!

If one chose to combine the two releases of "Tin Man" (and, for that matter, "The Survivors" and "Elementary, Dear Data") into some logical order, does anybody know how that would go?

Just watched "Tin Man" to make sure (because I'm curious too and it's a good ep):

1: Soft - :21
2: Student - :40
3: Unique - :18
4: Welcome - :12
5: Data - :16
6: Problems - :23
7: Land of Living - 1:16
8: Not Nice - 1:00
9: Scared - :46
10: Closing - :41
11: Tin Man Contact - :53
12: One Way Trip - 1:10
13: All of It - 1:01
14: Right - 2:59
15: Romulans - 1:21 (replaced by McCarthy cue in the episode)
16: Meet - 3:23
17: No Choice - 3:32
18: Tam - :22

Most of these can be assembled in order, although "Right" and "Romulans" would have to be edited out of their suites if you want a completely chronological presentation.

Thanks for posting this! I'll need to do the same for "The Survivors" and "Elementary Dear Data", I think.

I've been working my way through this set since it arrived, listening either before or after work (depending on what shift I have). It's absolutely surreal to realise that I've got virtually all of the music I've ever wanted from The Next Generation and damn near all of the music from The Original Series. Who could ever have seen this coming a decade ago?

We're so lucky to be film and TV score fans at this point in time. I've got to tell my middle school-aged self to chill about Star Trek music.

Thank you to everyone who's worked on all of these great Star Trek releases. They are very much appreciated.

At this point, what from TOS is not available? The only thing I could think of was the cue from “Spock's Brain,” but that's been addressed.

Nothing of note. Just percussion stingers. However, the last time I said we had everything, the anal retentive children came out of the woodwork to correct me.

I got my set. Thank you, La La Land. The TOS second/third season library music sounds great and was very worthy of inclusion. Question: Was the last half of track 13. Prime Specimen (“The Cage” M21–30) LM19 (3:13) actually used in any second/third season TOS episode? If so, which one(s)? I'm asking about the section of the track (as seen in the first pilot, but different recording) where Pike was abducted by the Talosians and taken underground.

The Blue Lagoon

I don't think it was. Quite a bit of both pilot library cues recorded for the Third Season didn't actually make it into the show.

Hello. Thanks for the reply. I didn't remember hearing it in any 2nd/3rd season episode.

Correct me if wrong, but didn't Lukas address this a few weeks ago, saying we had everything -- only some wild percussion takes were not included?

Pretty much.

We have every melody theme, motif and variation, and with this new set, every single cue of note accounted for. This is about as comprehensive representation as I've ever seen. I am content to call it "complete."

I think I mentioned it in this thread, might have been the other Trek set thread though. Anyways, I have been putting together the full episode scores for about 2 years now. I'm up to A Taste of Armageddon right now and there is only one cue I had to rip from the Bluray audio and that was a Percussion stinger that was from Charlie X but never used in that episode. It pops up towards the end of the episode "Miri". So far, that is the only music of any kind I have had to get elsewhere from the set. I think there is a little chime stinger from "Man Trap" that is used in "Devil In the Dark" that may or may not be on the set, either. But I haven't done that episode yet, so I am not sure.

Anyways, as far as actual cues go the 2012 set and this one are pretty much complete minus a few stingers that have been mentioned. Technically speaking we have 99.9% of the music heard LOL But that's more than good enough for me! It's a good 85% more than what we ever had up until about 4 years ago that's for sure.

Correct me if wrong, but didn't Lukas address this a few weeks ago, saying we had everything -- only some wild percussion takes were not included?

Sometimes at the end of a recording session they would record "wild" music/FX like different percussion strikes or (after The Empath and Is There in Truth No Beauty?) Yamaha keyboard white noise. Whenever there was some compositional or historical value to these recordings, we would include it in the "bonus" sections (like the sounds that became the transporter effect or McCoy's medical equipment beeps). But often it was just someone striking a drum with different sticks for five minutes. Maybe they thought they had a planet show coming up and might need it. Maybe it was for general studio use. Who knows. For the purposes of releasing anything that resembles music...we're done!

Maybe some of that stuff was filler intended to make the payroll time sheets and reels of recorded tape add up to what a contract had promised. And no one imagined in a million years that audio archeologists would some day sift through those tapes and find them out.

Under this hypothesis: having more than delivered the quality needed for TV music, they then had to deliver the quantity of tapes.

I don't think it was filler in that sense. I think it was more likely created to be used, but in many instances it does seem like they were laying down things rather randomly.

I'm loving this set! In terms of all the additional TNG music, I'm having fun expanding my season-by-season "highlights" compilations. Adding in the extra McCarthy music balances out the Ron Jones for seasons 1-4 and contrast to the Chattaway music from seasons 5-7, of which there is more available. And we have so much from seasons 1-3, with this plus Volumes 1 and 2 from LLL, it's pretty cool considering how little there was on disc outside of the Ron Jones set (which is always awesome).

That seems right to me. When you have the people, you get things you may never need, because it's more expensive to reassemble them later in case you do need them. All television series I've ever done have music cues recorded generically that were never ultimately used, along with various room tones and "walla," plus unused establishing shots, etc.

Arrived last night!

So far I've listened to all of disc 4, it's really impressive. Very happy to hear some of my requests like La Paloma, and the source cue "Plucking Three" - I fondly remember these clips from the Star Trek Omnipedia CD-ROM I owned ages ago. The Star Trek Experience track is just a wonder to listen to, as are the early mock ups for DS9 and Voyager - such a treasure trove.

Also very happy to have the Dixon Hill tunes, such lovely songs - especially from First Contact. And the Klingon Opera, and McCarthy's comments in the liner notes about how he approached it - just golden.

I also listened to the Inner Workings, and Sans Narration End Credits on disc one, simply stunning.

I only had time to listen to some of the animated series last night, but really loved the story behind it's original composition/recording in the liner notes. I never watched the show, but have seen clips and recognize the melodies. I am blown away at the sound quality, and was grinning as I turned up the sound on my stereo. I can't wait to dive back in later tonight.

Also, did anyone else notice Jeff Bond's early comment in the liner notes about the possibility of a 51st Anniversary Collection if fan demand is there?

For me? Yes please.

Also happy to see comments in there about fan's influence on the most recent Enterprise set and forthcoming DS9 and Voyager sets. 2017 is already a winner with LLL. wink

"If you requested Star Trek music not included here, don't give up! Stay vocal and perhaps they can be included on a 51st anniversary collection!"

Hmmmm.

What an amazing world it is where I can't think of a single thing! (You post TNG fans undoubtedly feel differently of course.)

BTW, the Ron Jones "inspired by" tracks are amazing. Jones could have written like THIS for the TV shows? Not only did they not let him but he got FIRED? I think Rick Berman's contribution to Star Trek is underrated. But wanting to burn him in effigy for what he did to the music is dead to rights.

That's actually great to hear that more TNG music is possible if sales warrant it. I compiled the TNG (and DS9) requests list for Lukas, and there is actually a decent amount of requested material still unreleased, such as the much-mentioned teaser cue from Conundrum.
