Is there anyone who uses the SoundtrackCollector.com site who can find a listing for this release? I’ve been trying for months to add this to my private collection tracker and damned if I can find a trace of it anywhere in their database. It’s jackin’ with my OCD, yo!

Was the story behind the newly-discovered elements on TOS ever revealed? I'd love to know where they came from.

I don't know if I told this story yet...but I don't see why not now:

They came from the estate of the guy who had originally gotten them (be it by hook or by crook, as it were) from Paramount Pictures. He had sold almost all of the TOS tapes to one party, who kept them safe for many years and gave them to Neil Norman and GNP Crescendo circa 1990 to use to make the GNP TOS CDs. But these few "newly discovered" tapes (of the library music sessions) had evidently been held back by the first guy (I suspect it was just an oversight) and were still in his possession for decades. After he died (a few years ago), there was an estate sale, and we saw these tapes on eBay and La-La Land bought them. We later gave them to CBS, of course, who kindly reimbursed he eBay cost. And that's the story!

Lukas,

I would love to hear more about the "saw these tapes on eBay" part ...
Do or did you regularly search for master tapes on eBay?
With repeated success? Other examples? Or how did this come about?

Mind blown.

How nice that CBS reimbursed y'all the Ebay costs. Was there a HUGE bidding war?

I think somebody noticed them on eBay and let us know. That's never happened before, or since, for anything I've worked on. I don't remember a bidding war, luckily.

Wow, thanks to that somebody! CBS should have comped them a copy of this set in gratitude.

I just figured those were the tapes that accidentally slid under Lukas' front seat when he picked them up as Norman's house.

Just truly amazing.

What you good people have managed to do for Star Trek music is beyond comprehension. It's truly a miracle that we have what we have. Not to sound too saccharine, but you have brought so much joy to so many listeners. Thank you all.

I once left the master tapes to Coma in my car as I ran into the supermarket. I almost never, ever did something so irresponsible, but I remember being famished or absolutely needing something and thinking, ah, I'll be quick. (Of course it was all fine.)

Lukas,
Trying to settle a question that I raised in this or another thread. Did you guys find enough cues from the Ebay tapes to redo the entire TOS set? Or was everything you had put on the 50th anniversary edition? I mean is there yet another Star Trek the original series complete set waiting to be compiled with even better sound?

I say there’s a lot more of them than what was on the 50th anniversary set. Others say everything you had was put on the 50th.

No, we only needed to release the first generation masters for the cues on the 50th Anniversary set. The vast majority of the TOS box set is already from the first generation masters—can't get any better than those!

No kidding. Can you believe the FSM Wrath of Khan is going to be TEN this summer? So... From 2009-2012 was all of the TOS movies and then six months later the Big Kahuna: The BOX (if I have my dates correct).

Many thanks to all involved!

If you had left the engine running, it could be a different story. smile

After all this time, I'm still marveling at how the 50th Collection completes and perfects the 15-CD set, TMP, and TWOK. It's like a keystone that completes the arch of Classic Cast music. It's so fantastic to have every last thing.

In other news, I just noticed an error on page 5 of the booklet. It says Areel Shaw was played by Joan Winston, when in fact the actress was Joan Marshall. Not sure if this has been mentioned before. Joan Winston was a big name in mid-1970s Star Trek fandom, but she never played a part on the show.

Where were you when we needed you, zap.

We're still missing the main title with Shat's monologue. I mean it's as iconic as any of the music in the series.

I love the improved sound on the Library cues. Really like night and day.

I made a huge investment in the 15-CD box set of the Star Trek TOS, only to discover I had the "night" versions you mentioned above. Before I'd even auditioned the set in full, I was told that a "day" version of about 1 CD-worth of material was already being made available, but to get it I'd have to buy a further multi-disc box set of music mostly from entirely different productions I had no interest in whatsoever.
In other words, fifteen discs wasn't enough... I would have to buy NINETEEN if I wanted to enjoy the "night and day" difference you mention.
I never did get around to auditioning the rest of the TOS set. I make do with the Fred Steiner/Tony Bremner re-recordings.
