I'm not seeing any info about this being available on CD and/or through Varese. Is that actually confirmed, or is this just a digital download from Concord via Apple Music?

It'll be on their site tomorrow. It hasn't been officially announced by Varese. However, when they have a concurrent digital release that is available on streaming services, sometimes those services (in this case, Apple Music) will let the cat out of the bag because they show it in their "Coming Soon" category.

Got it, I didn't know that. Thank you!

Wow, HTTYD 2 and Iron Giant? Its an animation soundtrack fans dream come true! I'm in for both.
That cover though... I see the talented artists on FSM have already produced much better cover art.

Michael Kamen
Iron Giant, The: The Deluxe Edition (CD)
UPC: 888072415645
Release Date: 3/11/2022
Regular price: $19.98

The Iron Giant (1999) is a modern classic, an animated film directed by Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol) about a young boy who befriends a giant alien robot during the Sputnik era of the Cold War. Based on the 1968 book The Iron Man by poet Ted Hughes, the film is a marvel of heartfelt storytelling, with timeless themes of friendship, caring and self-determination.

Creating the Iron Giant’s beautiful, sympathetic score was Michael Kamen—one of his last major scores and his first animated film, miles away from the action blockbusters for which he had become known, but much closer to his heart. Kamen’s gorgeous score is full of melody, humor and sensitivity, grandly performed by the Czech Philharmonic. It scales as big as the threat of nuclear annihilation, and as intimate as the goodness that connects nine-year-old Hogarth Hughes to the alien machine—who decides he would rather be “Superman” than a weapon.

Varèse Sarabande released Kamen’s The Iron Giant score as a 49-minute program in 1999. This Deluxe Edition fills an entire CD, with a 64-minute score program plus 13 minutes of alternates, outtakes and rare demos—including a piano-and-guitar attempt at an unrealized song, “Souls Don’t Die,” based on Kamen’s theme, performed by Kamen and Eric Clapton. Tim Greiving’s new liner notes feature new interview material with director Brad Bird, music editor Christopher Brooks and orchestrator Blake Neely, going deep into Kamen’s working process and their adoration for the gifted, late composer.

The Iron Giant is a nice score, but it's already been released (and very-well presented) on CD.

Personally I'd rather have The Next Man (which has only been released on vinyl) or better-yet Frequency (which has never been released at all).

But those can presumably come from any label. Varese held rights to Iron Giant in perpetuity and therefore only they had the rights to expand it (same goes with Kamen's Hudson Hawk). I'm very grateful to have this Kamen masterpiece in complete form at last.

I was a fan of the original soundtrack but I much prefer the new one for the listening experience. It seems more fleshed out and developed.

I love the score to Frequency. That would be an instant buy for me.

I have never seen The Iron Giant, or listened to the score - outside of the track that always surfaces on a Varèse Sarabande compilation - so I am looking forward to this!

I have never seen The Iron Giant

See The Iron Giant! It's really a terrific movie, funny and charming and exciting. It holds a special place in my heart as it's the first movie I ever showed my sons, and they loved it. But it's delightful for adults, too. And an atypically gentle Kamen score, too.

Oh my goodness. See The Iron Giant. One of the greatest animated films of all time. And though Brad Bird has done great work since, IMO it's still his best. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll get chills up your spine. See it and don't delay.

And the music fits the film perfectly.

Took me a while to get into the film. The Looney Tunes cartoon style really didn't fit the over all mood of the film and the opening scene in the dinner with the squirrel really had me worried this was going to be full of crass humor. (almost turned it off at that point) But it soon after finds its legs. Its moving and funny with some fine animation in parts. Though there's a few WTF moments in the film.

I seem to recall there's one or two new animated sequences in the Directors Cut. Were those scenes scored with new music and if so are they present on the expanded edition?

Nope. One of the added scenes uses source music from the period (I can only assume those songs were too much of a hassle to license) while the other added scene has music which is primarily tracked-in from the piece “Trance-Former” and considering Kamen had been dead for about a decade when the extended version was released, I doubt he had any involvement.

Oh the film is great, a very well-rounded, well-considered story, full of genuine feeling, and full of exemplary pacing and timing.
Likewise this full score release has made a very strong first impression on me.

Just to clarify, because it came up in the "What Kamen scores are left to expand?"-thread here and over at JWFAN: no actual alternates or additional cues were left off the Deluxe Edition.

The cues Chris Siddall might refer to are Michael's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. takes of cues that were revised by him in the process of the recording sessions. While undoubtedly interesting, those are just work in progress takes (no alternates to be considered) and do not represent Michael's final version of the respective cue.

If one regards every take from each cue as something that should be released then no release so far is complete.
Again, no alternates or final takes were omitted. It's all there.
