Well, I guess we can safely rule out El Cid based on Frank’s remark. That said, I will continue to pray that Nevinson’s other guess, Joan of Arc, will eventually be given a release, whether it’s by way of a re-recording or the miraculous discovery of original tapes.

Elmer Bernstein's CAPTAINS AND THE KINGS (tv mini-series) Elmer Bernstein's (essentially unused) DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS (awesome score) Elmer Bernstein's TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, full score from session tapes (I know you're out there!) I thought La-La Land was releasing Devil In A Blue Dress? This one has been under their banner for a while but no progress I guess. Half the score was used in the film or close to it and it is brilliant. I'd like it to be National Lampoon's Animal House...after all it has been 40 years plus now. I wish they would release Patrick Williams' fun score to Hero At Large, which last year would've been the films' 40th Anniversary. Williams is woefully underrepresented on CD. A real shame because he does have some gems that deserve a release. Hey! I want Aspen Extreme too!

The Blue Max Oh how we laughed... Bernstein's CAPTAINS AND THE KINGS (tv mini-series) Yeah im surprised this hasnt been done before now. Good typical Elmer score. Those Best Seller series were all good. I didnt realise Elmer wrote the theme but only 7 episodes, Dana Kaproff wrote an episode.

To me, a "most welcome surprise" implies a title where as far as fans have been told the elements are lost, not a title a million fans are expecting to eventually get one day Please...for the love of God...MY BODYGUARD. Yeah, if they can find the session tapes...FINALLY!!

Years ago, there were reports of a m&e tape for EL CID floating around. Too many battle sounds drowning out the music. But, given advances in technology, you never know... ( Of course I’d get it, though I frankly now prefer the Tadlow, if only because it has so much unused music.) There was an “independent” CD of THE PRIDE AND THE PASSION floating about in the 90’s. A number of effective cues not on the original release. Beautiful score. (I like it so much I wonder what Antheil’s other work is like. Anyone here familiar with another score of his for Stanley Kramer, NOT AS A STRANGER?) If we’re talking “lost” scores, then I’d surely encourage JOAN OF ARC, HELEN OF TROY, and GREEN DOLPHIN STREET. All worthy of re-recording. There were even announcements of more Stothart scores from the MGM vaults. At one point, Lukas announced MARIE ANTOINETTE, which was rumored as nearly complete. But I’d love THE GOOD EARTH, THE PAINTED VEIL, and any number of others. Stothart is sadly underrated. Or, how about maestro Newman’s MY FRIEND FLICKA? Gorgeous score. Love to see a legitimate release of that paired with THUNDERHEAD SON OF FLICKA, which uses variations of the themes. That would be welcome!

If we’re talking “lost” scores, then I’d surely encourage JOAN OF ARC, HELEN OF TROY, and GREEN DOLPHIN STREET. All worthy of re-recording. We do know they have a Steiner in the works, so perhaps we may not have to wait for a re-recording of Helen of Troy, supposing the Steiner is Helen of Troy, of course. Of course, whether the Steiner is the "welcome surprise" or not is debatable, but it is a possibility. As for Stothart and Marie Antoinette, this is from Lukas’ low quantity write up on Dragon Seed: the only proper way to release more Stothart is to take the studio masters, and the family masters (acetates and transfers therefrom), and combine them in the computer to reconstruct these classic scores into the most complete forms possible. (I have some 78 minutes from the studio in very good mono sound of Marie Antoinette, but wanted to see what the estate had...and we never got that far.) There are quite literally dozens of Stothart scores that could be done as a limited edition box set of 500 (I am, sadly, not joking about that small number) that would take a lot of work, but if any other label wants to tackle this—and can get the studio and the estate on board—I will gladly, and thankfully, turn over all my paperwork, research and digital files pro bono. https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/daily/article.cfm?articleID=6782
