I typically don't care for Goldsmith's comedy scores and was prepared to let this pass, having owned neither of the previous releases, but the samples (particularly "The Sentinel") really sold me.

Who even are you?? It’s The ‘burbs, man!

Getting close to December and my budget is slim, I ordered this first since we only have 1500 of them. Not taking any chances. Godfather I will order next year.

I had to make similar choices. I ordered this and Godfather but put off Tomorrow Never Dies until next year.

The ‘Burbs has always been a favorite movie and score for me.
I love the End Credits.

Yeah, The Burbs always struck me as a very American film that wouldn't play well outside USA.
I'm not even sure it got a cinema release in the UK? (Edit..it did... July 1989 I saw it).
I think I liked it more at the time because of the Goldsmith music, which elevates it so much beyond the TV move it actually is.
The story is too daft and OTT and the characters are all very annoying.

The film was hurried into production because of an imminent strike by the Writers Guild of America, and in fact it was shot during the strike, so no rewriting could be done during the production. Dante encouraged the cast to improvise, which accounts for the film's very loose feel. It's not a film I enjoy, but I know it has its admirers.

The 'Burbs is my favorite Dante movie alongside Gremlins 2.

The notion of someone deriding one of his films for being over the top makes me wonder if they're familiar with his other comedies. This is downright sedate by his standards.

The ‘Burbs is my favorite Joe Dante movie (my wife loved it too), and favorite Goldsmith score for Dante by far. In fact it’s easily my favorite Goldsmith comedy score, period (and I like Goldsmith in comedy mode more than most!)

I’m excited to hear the previously unreleased music on this, and the audio with the Mike Mattesino touch.

Dante's films from this period are the epitome of sophomoric humor. They really capture the essence of "edgy family comedy" that skirts the line between wholesome and kind of dark (a very distinctly 80s vibe). I imagine a lot of the fans of his films in general saw them when they were young or coming of age and that "edgyness" is what makes them so fondly remembered.

Are they great cinema? No. But they are a source of nostalgia for a lot of people in my generation, a generation which bases almost it's entire identity on nostalgia.

...so leave The 'Burbs alone! (...j/k wink)

I'm a huge Joe Dante fan, have been ever since I saw his earliest low budget horror films (Piranha, The Howling) at the cinema.
Every new film was highly anticipated and rarely disappointed (Gremlins, Innerspace) and whether it was Donaggio or Goldsmith, the scores would become favourites too.
Although I loved the music to Explorers, the film ended up being a bit of a botch job, not helped by studio tinkering. But it still had a lot of sweet innocence and goofy charm.
But I think The Burbs was the first one where I thought 'it's allllright' but I never loved it or found it particularly funny.
The music was its saving grace for me.

Huh. I never loved the Gremlins films (they were okay) growing up, but I didn’t see The ‘Burbs or Matinee until I was an adult, and they are my favorite Dante films. My wife and I saw The ‘Burbs for the first time together about a decade ago and we both laughed all the way through it! I also really do think Innerspace holds up well overall.

Now, if someone would just reissue *THAT*, I'd be a very happy camper!

I'm pretty sure I saw MV express once on this board (since Covid maybe) that a new edition was on the LLL to-do list.

I think a second disc could be added with the original album program/mix, plus any unreleased alternates to fill it out...

I saw THE 'BURBS for the first time in the theater in 1989 with my dad and have loved it ever since, the score too.

To be fair, I think the score is probably 90% of why I love the movie so much. It is probably (barely) Top 10 Goldsmith for me, to be perfectly honest. It's awesome. So creative, full of everything and the kitchen sink...but yet it still all gels together super brilliantly (moreso perhaps than say Looney Tunes: Back in Action, though I also love that and it would have been better no doubt if Goldsmith had been able to score the finale and wrap everything up together).

I never saw that. I was THIS close to biting the bullet and buying it on the secondary market. But fate popped in and said "No you're not. Jeff step away from the computer." big grin
