If I had the shorter versions of many other scores (THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK) I'd probably play them more.

Shorter version of "The Empire Strikes Back?" I can definitely say that I respect your opinion as I like both presentations of this one as well. However, I think that the "complete" version was invented for a release like this, imo. Unfortunately, still not fully remastered.frown I mean every note of this one is like bliss. Bliss and heaven. Oh, it's like gorgeousness and gorgeosity made flesh. It is like a bird of rarest spun, heaven metal. Or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship...gravity all nonsense now.

It's a great score, but it's just too long and I simply can't be bothered with that much music. Two discs' worth of music which run for more than two hours, almost exactly the same time as the film itself; meanwhile the original album was a terrific listening experience with just ten tracks. Even the double LP, at 74 minutes, was pushing it. Meanwhile, one of my favourite ever cues, The Battle In The Snow, is buried somewhere in the middle of a 15-minute suite. The result is that I never play the damn thing. So yes, frankly I'd prefer the shorter album.

I love all these complete, deluxe editions of film scores that are coming out to replace the old "LP program" CDs. But like most of us I can't buy everything.

This is a partial list of titles where I chose to stick with the old CD:

ALIENS
BASIC INSTINCT
BATMAN (FSM) 1966
BATMAN 1989
CARRIE
JAWS (MCA)
THE OMEGA MAN
POLTERGEIST

Regrets? I've had a few. But then again, I've also regretted a couple of double dips I went for and found that it wasn't needed.

But most often, I have upgraded to the Fancy New and been happy as hell.

So, what titles have you decided not to replace?

All boils down to how much money you have and can afford to spend.

It's a great score...

Wholeheartedly agreed. Imo, all the presentations work.

A day does not a week make,
nor does an edit a reply take,
in the double post wake.

Nothing like a little poetry to pass the "double posting" time, eh?big grin

I didn't upgrade ROBOCOP (TER), LIFEFORCE (Varese) or PREDATOR (Varese) because I was perfectly happy with the earlier issues.

I, too, found the first LIFEFORCE had as much of the score as made an entertaining listen for me.

So far seven of us have listed POLTERGEIST. I hope that's not a bad sign for Lukas.

It seems like the new edition is really best for those who don't have the Rhino, or big fans of the score who are also audiophiles with good equipment.

Right, I really do not see the "upgrade" as worth $25, especially when I got the Rhino release for half that price.

Aliens - I know right off the bat an extended album would kill my positive impression of this score.

And I had the exact opposite reaction. IMHO, the expanded edition is flawless from start to finish and improves on the original release drastically. One of Horner's most satisfying complete scores! "Facehuggers" is worth the price of the disc alone!

I think so too. I downloaded it from iTunes.

I can say I buy just about everything that's expanded. Give dmd all the music!!

I'll second.
Of all the quoted titles till now, I have the expanded version and no regret.

If I can expand my collection with an expanded release I expand my mind and soon expand an order.

The new 'Poltergeist' I can live without.

Seven people who chose to visit this forum and post in this very thread about keeping their vastly inferior Rhino Poltergeist release.

I don't think that is very representative of the film score fan crowd.

I can understand your reasons to chose to not upgrade for most of these, but in some cases I'd recommend you to reconsider.

ALIENS for me is the case on which the extra tracks really improve the listening experience. Tracks like the mentioned Facehuggers and Queen to Bishop are essential. The complete edition also improve soo much the sound that I really can not listen to the old version anymore, specially on the suspense portions which are much better in this release.

In the case of JAWS, the album is great on its own and a perfect listening experience. But the complete is also essential if you're a fan of the movie and score (as I am), and a complete different entity. I can understand that if you not a fan you don't need the complete score (I feel the same for ET, I never listen to the expanded editions, but only to the album). The problem with Jaws is subpar sound on all CD releases.

With POLTERGEIST I can not wait to receive the new FSM edition. It is one of my favourite scores and I'm sure the improved sound will add a lot to the listening experience (I'm distracted by some of the hiss in the Rhino edition in tracks such as The Light). The album is also great and I will love to hear it again after many years.

BASIC INSTINCT was a perfect album, but the improved sound is the reason to upgrade on this one. In fact I've recreated the album for my iPod with the superior sound of the expanded edition. But, on ocasion, I listen to some of the extra tracks and I'm glad the expanded edition was released!

I simply could not bring myself to buy the remake of the Conan score. Many on here were thrilled with this remake, that was "What Poledouris really wanted". I get that. To me, it is not the score to the movie I saw. It just sounds all wrong. The original recordings, even if they were only the best the composer could do at the time, is still the score I have known and loved all these years.

CDs I chose not to upgrade because I never liked them (enough) in the first place:

John Barry THE CHASE
Bruce Broughton SILVERADO
Danny Elfman BATMAN
Danny Elfman MARS ATTACKS!
Jerry Goldsmith PATTON
Jerry Goldsmith MORITURI
James Horner KRULL

A CD I would LUUUV to downgrade:

John Williams E.T.

A CD I did upgrade and regret to have given away (the original LP cut on CD):

Ennio Morricone LE PROFESSIONNEL

I used to play this up and down for days, but I never play the expanded GDM Club edition. Too little variation in that one. It's overkill. (But sorry, I'm not ready to part with the GDM version...yet wink)

The state of film score collecting has come a long way! It's gone from looking for an album release to hoping for an expanded album release to demanding an expanded/complete album release to belittling the sound quality of the previous release in favor of the new expanded/complete/remastered release. Nice.

The complete edition also improve soo much the sound that I really can not listen to the old version anymore, specially on the suspense portions which are much better in this release.

I love the main title to ALIENS, but I run into trouble with the rest of the Varese CD because I'm such a WRATH OF KHAN man that the commonalities are distracting. There might be great cues on the expanded CD, but I probably wouldn't play it. So I have the ALIENS main title on a film highlights playlist with stuff from all over the place, including the superb title cue from BASIC INSTINCT.

In the case of JAWS, the album is great on its own and a perfect listening experience.

Agreed, and while I'm glad fans have access to the whole thing, the short program is enough for me.

It seems like, after 35-45 minutes of any one score, I'm ready for something else, or maybe to repeat my favorite cues from that score. I'm all for complete releases, but I end up skipping at least a track or two on even my favorite ones.

I can't believe that! I think you should give the new Batman a chance. It's something totally different. Not only you are stunned by the superior quality sound (just compare the very beginning, shocking!!!) but the expanded Batman is a mine of gems to discover. A symphony of supreme beauty which unfolds thanks to the many extra tracks.

No, I'm not paid by MV...
