To be fair, the author never called herself an intellectual.

Ineffectual is more like it.

Anti-intellectualism/academia has been a core component of this forum since I became a member more than 20 years ago. So nothing new there, I shrug it off and move on. The angle the author of this thesis has chosen, is perfectly legitimate. It's a way of contextualizing a piece of popular culture that isn't just about the superficial values that film music nerds are so occupied with. It also helps to get funding for the project, or to get it approved. Leave the superficial details to fan literature, and the 'larger picture' to academic texts. I've always found the latter a far more interesting read.

But great find with the list of composer candidates! Very intriguing to see that Williams was considered for this, back when he was one of the most promising composers in the industry.

-----------------------------------------------------------
How is this the writings of an intellectual? This writer is coo coo for Coco Puffs.

"Chapter Two analyzes the position and presentation of Captain James T. Kirk and the ways in which the series’ scoring framed him as the white, heteronormative, male, American hero."

----------------------------------------------------------------
You're just proving Thor's point. You can disagree or agree with the author's position here and perhaps come up with logical and well thought-out arguments to support your position...but to just dismiss the author as "coo coo" has a distinct anti-intellectual bias.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Look, Mommy! "heteronormative" is "intellectual"!

*snicker*

Good to see a thread in which our esteemed moderator has allowed Retrograde Reaction to run amok.

Keep it up, fellows! Sunlight is the best disinfectant!

Think of yourselves as "antibodies", like the crew of the Enterprise became in "The Immunity Syndrome". The jargon-ists of academe need your animus in order to sharpen the force of their arguments.

Though some of you are just witless curmudgeons. Yawn.

All I can say is,
You morons better be grateful I never got my PHD.

What is your argument again? "Agree with what I say or I'll call you a dinosaur and a witless curmudgeon"? That sounds about right.

In fact, your side never even makes an argument, only assertions that those who disagree with your totem-pole-of-oppression pecking order is a "dinosaur" or "witless curmudgeon" for having done so.

Have an actual argument and defend its principles, but you haven't done that, and being a collectivist, you never will. You'll just try and bully the opposition into defensively claiming they're not a racist or misogynist or some other pejorative term and hope they won't call out your belief system; a system you cannot defend without looking like the racist/misogynist you claim others to be. Stop projecting your petty hatreds and stop making scapegoats out of one group of people for the bad things their long-dead ancestors did centuries before you ever whined about a dented booklet or cracked jewel case.

And I'm STILL waiting for Jeff Bond to step aside and let an oppressed minority write some liner notes. big grin

Phelps isn't a white supremacist.
He just plays on one TV.

Well said. The whole "anti-intellectual" accusation, in particular, was what magicians call misdirection, to distract from the feebleness, the silliness, of saying that Star Trek music is racist. If they can't defend an idea, they launch ad hominem attacks on those who question it.

As usual, I find it nearly impossible to figure out who is arguing with whom, and about what.

But it was quite upsetting to see this turn into a food fight (pretty quickly, at that).

I wish people would express their opinions in a more constructive way and be more respectful of each other, and of the subject in this case.

Are you serious? You really and truly think that what you linked to is innocuous?

On a related note -- question for Jeff Bond -- are there plans for an updated version of your book "The Music of Star Trek?"
