Nice to see the LP art on the back of the booklet. Does anyone have a lead on a high-res jpg of that album art?

Every spot that has it seems to have this exact version, 1600 x 1600. For now, this is the best I can find.

Whoops! 'Booklet', not CD case.

Doing my first listen, and I am enjoying the Morton Stevens tracks more than I remembered.

Is it because of the improved sound? Am I just more receptive?

Dunno, but track by track I'm ever more glad I picked this up. Always adored the Goldsmith tracks, but defo digging M. Stevens' work more than I recall.

Such good stuff. And the mini series is very much worth watching. I enjoyed the novel it was based on as well, The Antagonists by Ernest K. Gann.

I am curious, comparing the TV recording and the re-recording released on the 1981 album -- say, as between "Move On" on the one hand, and "The Road to Masada" on the other -- what was the size and composition of the respective orchestras?

I received my copy yesterday - so prompt getting here. Can't believe I've actually started buying film music again. There's so much out there now! Loving it.

It's an ideal time to get (back) in. A little over 25 years ago, soundtrack releases entered the Criterion Collection phase. If it started in earnest with FSM, our other loved labels quickly followed, and it became this (very high) standard we're all used to, and I still appreciate.

And they've only gotten better. Look at Fiddler - two booklets? And what a great one is the research focused book. Listen to the (as usual) wonderful conversation Mike Mattesino had with Maurizio and Tim on the Legacy podcast. At around 1:27:20, they amble into the subject of The Documentation, things they discovered (Mike had help from the Legacy team and our own Saul Pincus) and pulled together - it's probably as definitive as it is fascinating.

Then on top of that, most of the time the new releases sound better than they did before, and they probably already sounded great. Missing music is found. Beatles Anthology style tracks are included.

If physical media is dying, it is dying so gracefully.

Great examples - couldn't have provided better.

This new set has an arrangement of the familiar television MCA Logo (in a slightly different arrangement) that the notes say Stevens conducted. I don't believe it says who composed that logo theme. Was it also Stevens? Certainly quite possible, but if that's in the notes, I missed it.

That logo music ended each episode -- didn't miss a beat between the last note of the end credits and the first note of the logo music.

I thought Disc 1 was all supposed to be Goldsmith only, but it has the MCA logo music at the end now too…

If I recall correctly, there were no notes or track details in the Varese release of the album either.
The album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, in 1981.

Hi Basil
thanks for the info,
but i just wonder, that this part of this fabulous release did not find any mentioning within the booklet, as if it was not included wink , where other parts or track by track infos of this set where very elaborated, first thought there were some missing pages in my booklet.

CDs 1 and 2 of Intrada’s Patton release also fit on a single disc. As with Patton, the film and album recordings have different owners (Universal Music Group — different entity from Universal Pictures — owns the Masada album recording just as they do Patton). UMG I think also usually handles manufacturing in-house of the discs they license out. So that’s likely why it had to be on its own disc. We’ve seen this many times before really.

Marvelous set. Very happy that it arrived just in time for Christmas.

This site seems to have a lot of info on studio fanfares and mentions the following…

Juan Esquivel teamed up with Revue music director Stanley Wilson to create one of the most identifiable TV logos for series distributed by Universal/MCA-TV.

The MCA Logo music on this set is Arranged by Mort Stevens. I can tell by just listening to it:-)
