MusicMAD gives Hitchcock's BEST film 4 out of 10?

" It's madness. MADNESS!"

Are you seriously suggesting Frenzy (1972) is Hitchcock's best film? Please state what criteria you are using to derive this answer ... (perhaps: his best film released in 1972?)

Full frontal nudity!

I couldn't find one for SAD

For the record, I think Frenzy (1972) is more enjoyable than either Torn Curtain (1966) or Topaz (1969), his two prior films, both of which are tedious, even boring. But trying to enliven Frenzy with nudity was a mistake as was the overly-long salacious rape sequence - this did not add anything to the audience's appreciation of Rusk. Since everything else in the film wreaked of the 1950s it's a shame Hitchcock didn't keep with this idea and let the audience imagine the crime.

But Frenzy has some great lines throughout! Too many to list.
Is it psycho or north by northwest? No, but its still a classic.
The whole potato truck sequence with Rusk trying to retrieve his tiepin is superbly crafted.

Blaney: "....Do I look like a sex murderer to you? Can you imagine me creeping around London, strangling all those women with ties? That's ridiculous... For a start, I only own two..!"

Not gonna ' defend' one of my favorite films with a nut job. Madman or a lunatic.
You poor misguided fool.
wink

Fyi it was the first film he directed after censorship restrictions were lifted which meant he could FINALLY direct a film the way he wanted. Including gratuitous nudity.

Thanks, Bill - appreciated ... I may use those words for my tombstone smile

As for the dialogue you credit ... I'm afraid little of it did much for me. Amusing line re: two ties, certainly ... I did give the film a rating of 4 ... but I found the mix of black humour (retrieving the jacket pin) and serious scenes (rape) uneasy. If it was meant to be serious story why was so much of storyline unbelievable?

Then I'm glad he's not making films today.

THEY WHO DARE
1954, Dir lewis milestone

Rhodes-set mission film where dirk bogarde's commandos and Greek guides are dropped off by sub and set off to destroy as many german planes as possible on 2 airfields. In a way, a tamer forerunner to the Gubs of Novocane. Of course, altho the mission is a partial success, it goes a bit tits up and the commandos are on the run dodging german patrols hunting them down. There is one great sequence where they avoid capture as a shepherd gets his goats to surround them. Sam Kydd is in there as always, as is a young Denholm Elliott.
Decent enough 7.7 out of 10

THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1968) - 8/10

When this film was released, it was was equally praised and damned for the same things. Use of split screen imagery? ("It all works superbly" - Variety / "Dragged in to no conceivable purpose" - New York) Steve McQueen? ("Always special" - New York Times / "Stops acting and settles for a long series of poses" - Time) Faye Dunaway? ("Makes an excellent detective" - Variety / "Used solely as a clotheshorse" - Time) Those costumes? ("31 smashing costume changes" - Time / "Dunaway keeps changing into less and less attractive clothes" - New York) The script? ("An excellent screenplay" - Variety / "A trite and tired television-level tale" - New York)

Having finally caught up with this film after 50 years, you can sign me up for the positive comments. I'll add in plaudits for the Michel Legrand score and song ("The Windmills of Your Mind") as well as the overall style of the film, which seems more than the sum of its parts.

Actually bob that "Dunaway keeps changing into less and less attractive clothes" is an interesting observation and its true, she does wear some unflattering stuff - but she was so glamorous and sexy at that time, she couldve worn a bin liner and got away with it.

It was a squeaker. The $48 million remake (1999) grossed $69 million. (Naturally, we don't count the $55 million foreign grosses.)

The 1968 original grossed $17.9 million, placing it at #18 on the list of the year's top earners.

Once Upon a Time In Hollywood – 9/10

Not quite in the same league as Leone’s West and America, none the less I really enjoyed it. Damian Lewis was a hoot in a cameo, and Margot Robbie spookily conjured up the spirit of Sharon Tate with the Polanski look-alike holding his end up almost as well. But the stars were of course DiCaprio and Pitt, both of whom were excellent in portraying the insecurities of stardom (Leo) and the ruthlessness of film-making (Brad). I thought the weakest part of The Hateful Eight might just have been Tarantino’s voiceover, and I’m delighted he didn’t make the same mistake here. An immersive film not to be sat down in front of lightly.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs – 9.75/10

I loved this film, but have to dock it a quarter-point because of the slight underuse of Brendan Gleeson. The six segments flew by with wit, insight and pathos, brilliantly written and perfectly cast. The best US-made western I’ve seen in ages.

CEFALONIA
2005
Ive had this recorded a while - i like to get to see Ennio Morricone-scored productions. The story of the italian acqui division stationed on cefalonia. After armistice causes conflict between italian and german forces there, the italians vote to fight the germans, leading to 5000 of the 9000 losing their life, many through firing squad. Ultimately their uprising defeats the germans on the island and the acqui were the only unit allowed to return to italy under flag and with arms at the end of the war.
Dir by Riccardo milani and stars inspector montalbano Luca Zingaretti. Ennio score is of high quality for a tv film and features his rousing hymn-like main theme.
7 out of 10.

Prey
2.5/10
Weird, micro-budget British sci-fi horror drama from 1977. Not really worth a watch. Looks nice in places, though.
