Over the years I've come to appreciate a lot about the prequels.
There's some really good stuff in there, despite the issues that are usually much-dissected.

Ian McDiarmid, for one.
The guy was gold in them.

I agree he was the best thing about the prequels.

Keep in mind, everyone thought the original STAR WARS was going to be a bewildering flop after viewing its initial edit too.

But nobody holds the prequels in high regard today.

Don't speak for me. With the possible exception of "Attack of the Clones", I happen to like them quite a bit, especially "Revenge of the Sith". They're definitely parsecs ahead of the godawful sequel trilogy...

But even if you didn't like them, there's no denying they were the highest grossing films (again, with the exception of AotC) of their release years. I know money doesn't always mean everything, but they certainly weren't "flops".

And the hate that's felt for them seems to be mostly from people who were originally fans of the OT. Those who grew up during the "Prequel Trilogy era" seem to regard them quite fondly, more often than not.

Jump the shark moment? Space horses on the Star Destroyer? big grin

Yeah, after we Disney got Star Wars, you'd think the stupid stuff like Jar Jar Binks and Ewoks would be over, but it continued. OFf the top of my head:

  • The above example of space horses on a Star Destroyer. Cringe worthy.

  • Lead character riding Force-sensitive alien creatures on "Star Wars: Rebels"

  • Oh, and if you haven't seen "Star Wars: Rebels" (A good show, albeit with flaws), you'll think I'm fucking kidding you about this, but I am not -- this is not a joke: space whales. Yes, whales in space. Oh, and they can travel at hyper speed. Yes. Fucking really.

"Life force" in TROS. Rey heals a gigantic snake. In the ending, Rylo heals Rey. They kiss. Then Rylo falls over dead. No can't make that up hahaha.

    Some other funny ones.....

    Woops "Kylo Ren" hahaha.....

Mauler's TROS review showing Kylo with a gun but shortly after when he confronts the soldiers for battle he doesn't have a gun. Reaches back into a vortex behind his head, and wa la, a light saber! Then the part about a 1000 Star Destroyers. All the millenial has to do is blow up an antenna and that's about the end of that problem.

ROTS- the ending battle that seems to cover several continents and time zones before a verdict is determined hahaha.

Mr Plinkett's review on the prequels and he asks various people if they can remember the names of any of the characters compared to say Han Solo. They can't, and the funniest part is when Plinkett asks his close friend, he LOL because he knows he knows he can't answer the question. (Palpatine is almost the ONLY memorable character from the series IMO.)

Yes, TROS is ripe with flaws (although I see it made a surprisingly solid 20th place on my list in 2019, out of 143 new films seen -- suppose that says something about my STAR WARS love in general; that I was willing to overlook a great deal of these flaws), but hey -- it has this awesome moment, which should have lasted for more than a micro second:

You don't get to make up the laws of physics as badly as JJ does w/o calling it lazy. Call it semi-plausible in fiction and that's acceptable to me.

Another thing is when Kylo and Rey kiss at the end, well there's no continuity or redemption there. Looks like it was tacked on for arch. Usually you do a tiny bit of establishment to give you a reason to believe they'd kiss. You don't force life your way to redemption and call it plausible.

I didn't know Saul Tigh was in Star Wars!

In a video titled 'Why the prequels are better than you think', one of the examples is because Palpatine's speech to Obi is the same as Vader's to Luke in Empire. big grin

Oh, and there is what appears to be nothing more than a giant Force rock, Bendu. Yes, it looks like a giant rock creature. Does it have vulnerable spots? Only "Galaxy Quest" knows...

Hmm. I don't recall Palpatine ever making a speech to Obi in any of the prequels...

    embarrassment

JJ: ....meaning it's not a nostalgia trip. We had to go backwards to go forwards.

Sounds like a nostalgia trip to me. roll eyes TFA: an escape pod, bar scene, ending celebration, sandy home planet, etc.

    Hehehe....my sentiments exactly. big grin

The prequels ARE superior to the sequel trilogy, but then again, so is my shopping list; so that really isn't saying much.
