I'm quiet satisfied with the released Zimmer-albums. I don't need an extended "Dark Knight" for example, but there's one exception: "King Arthur". I like the movie and I like the score very much, so an extended release would be nice.

Zimmer is the rare occasion where I enjoy the OST's a lot more than the expanded editions. I much prefer long suites over a lot of shorter cues. I never play my expanded Broken Arrow. Backdraft is perfectly represented on the OST. Not that I wouldn't buy expanded editions of his scores there are many I would like to get especially his animated scores. But I would also be interested in Pearl Harbor, Last Samaria among others. I guess I'm saying its a mixed bag. It's a bit amusing you mention Broken Arrow in relation to preferring long suites on the OST over the expanded ones when this is perhaps a good (if not THE one) example of a (good old 90s) Zimmer score where most of the original cues are in fact longer than most of the tracks on the OST... Regardless, most of the "suites" on a lot of Zimmer albums are still just the shorter, original cues combined. So it's not really longer suites, just a poor listening experience, where you might find many of the interesting cues buried deep within a long track. There are examples where original cues would fit nicely together in a longer track though, almost like if they were made for that purpose, like on The Rock, to give an example (not necessarely as it's been done on the OST though). And as for Backdraft, it depends on what you mean by perfectly represented, since what's on the OST is for the most part a completely different (non-Zimmer'ish) mix of the score. Like 90+ % of it is still officially unreleased in it's original form.

Most others just sound cheap and poor. Certainly the more synth/action stuff, like Crimson Tide, The Rock etc. doesn't sound good at all on most cover versions. The ones that doesn't try to mimic the originals are the best cover versions I think. Mostly because he has a guy who's "a beast when it comes to massive orchestra production" as he puts it (in the Pirates 3 youtube), which makes it sound like Zimmer, and also because he makes his own versions, and doesn't, again, mimic the originals exactly... In my opinion, Hans Zimmer doesn't compose movies "frame by frame" like John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith or any of the other composers that try to tell the movie's story with their music. As far as I know, Zimmer takes the assignment, comes up with a few thematic ideas and creates a few suites. After that, the suites are reshaped and reedited (copy and paste, not even by himself i might add) to fit the scene as much as possiple - often with lack of creativity or an enjoyable flow in the music. Therefore, in most cases the suite arrangments on Zimmer's OST will do the job and guarantee the best possible listening experience. There are exceptions like PEARL HARBOR, where complete ideas and important highlights are completely missing (like almost all of the brilliant action cues and alternates). I see, why soundtrack labels would prefer other composers for expanded and complete releases. It's not a matter of taste, but where expanded releases are really worth the effort, and where an OST can be improved.
