I listened yesterday to 4.5 hours of Orville Season 3 music and here are my thoughts on it.

"Electric Sheep"
Kevin Kaska is a genius. The way he uses little motifs to make action cues more coherent is utterly brilliant. "The Adventures uf Mu--" I mean "Training Exercises".. I don't know I like it more than Williams' "Adventures of Mutt".
The Orville is awesome at arrival cues but Kevin Kaska delivered the first departure cue "Leaving the Dockyard". I am out of words. Good cue. Good score.

"Shadow Realms"
The mix in "Searching the Alien Station" is at the beginning quite different to the Episode version: Less trumpets, more Blaster Beam.
I'm not sure if this score deserved the 35 minute runtime due to the bunch of less engaging suspense stuff but on the other side when it gets to action it's quite similar to "Firestorm" which is one of my favorite S1 scores.
The first half of "Searching the Alien Station"... Chef's kiss.

"Mortality Paradox", "Twice in a Lifetime", "From Unknown Graves" & "Future Unknown"
All four are solid scores, I just don't remember much from but all of them had moments of brilliance.

"Gently Falling Rain"
Right of the start Joel McNeely gifts us with another fantastic arrival cue and the following selection of cues is nice as well.

"A Tale Of Two Topas"
The score I was excited about the most and it didn't disappoint. The opening is amazing, "Heveena's Speech" & "Topa Wakes Up" are heartbreakingly beautiful, "Official Orders" reminds me of Star Trek 4 in a good way and I don't know what to say about "Kelly Invites Topa"... Kevin Kaska...

"Midnight Blue"
Another brilliant arrival cue... I mean.. how can they be this good?
My favorite bits of this score are "Beautiful Sight" and those two moments:
"Rushing Back" at 03:41
"Union Central" at 00:58

"Domino"
ARRIVAL MUSIC!!!!
The other 40-somewhat minutes by Kevin Kaska are also good.

The Orville Season 2: here are 20 minutes from Identity, Part 2
Kevin Kaska: here's one 20 minute track

#10 Talla Arrives (Mortality Paradox)
#09 Moclan Colony / Meeting Haveena (Midnight Blue)
#08 Making First Contact (All The World Is Birthday Cake)
#07 Tactical Alert (Domino)
#06 Searching The Alien Station (Shadow Realms)
#05 New World (Identity, Part 1)
#04 Arriving On Moclus (About A Girl)
#03 Alara Goes Home / Arriving Home (Home)
#02 The Bio-Ship / Exploring The Hull / Exploring The Bio-Ship (If The Stars Should Appear)
#01 Dalakos Arrival (Gently Falling Rain)

Still absorbing all this amazing music (hugely grateful that they included the Anne Winters song btw!!!)

I wonder though, the music seems slightly muted in this recording. Not sure it's the orchestra's size, or recording environment, or mixing decisions (there's a definite difference between the "sound" of season 1 versus that of seasons 2 and 3) or whether it's a dynamic range thing (some of it blasts while song of it virtually disappears).

It would be awesome to revist the season 1 and 2 albums, digitally or whatever, as the equivalent of 4-disc sets. It's a dream that so much was included here...

The difference between loud and quite is too big. I had to level a lot while listening and hadn't this problem at all with S1&2.

That's something I thought about too. Would we've got longer releases if LLL didn't do their physical editions?
But for me personally, they don't need to be longer. Season 1 is perfect as is and my only complaint on S2 is the really strange cut in the middle of "Prisoners of the Kaylon" and that Identity, Part 1 is a bit underrepresented in general.

Just in case you guys have to "redeliver" it at some point (or *IF* there's ever a physical release) I did notice one tiny error; track 36 starts a tad late, and cuts right into the middle of the opening note.

Thank you for catching that - I just shot off an email to look into this!

As for the mixes - these are mixes made for the album by Shawn Murphy; the episode mixes ARE different in places, but the album represents the composer's preferred vision of the music.

Thank you for feeding back all our thoughts and comments.

Is the "extreme" dynamic range part of that preferred vision? Only because this is a surprisingly difficult album to get right, volume-wise.... (it's not that the music is mixed differently to the TV version, it's that there's too great a difference between loud and quiet)

$24.99 256kbps m4a: https://music.apple.com/nz/album/the-orville-new-horizons-original-television-soundtrack/1674261061

Thanks for the link! For some reason when I searched directly in the iTunes store for the soundtrack it didn't come up in a search.

I'm 9 tracks in and this sounds great to me. I don't hear any sound problems nor does it sound tonally different than the physical releases. So far I'm really enjoying the score!

Straight from The Department of the News is There is No News:
THE ORVILLE---co-star Chad L. Coleman commented on the status of a possible Season 4, "We’re all in the loop and out of the loop. We think it’s gonna happen, but it’s still up in the air. There’s so much going on with all of these studios that it’s just like, ‘Well, we gotta settle this thing first, then we can really decide on that thing.’ A bunch of that is going on. We hope so. Seth has an amazing relationship with Dana [Disney co-head Dana Walden] and with Disney, who’s running it now. And they said they’ve had promising meetings, so we’ll see."

THE ORVILLE---Seth McFarlane posted his reply after a fan asked about the show's renewal, "The industry is in the midst of a time of upheaval and transition. I wish I could provide a definitive answer to your question. At the moment, all I can say is that I remain… cautiously optimistic."

Seth really blew the reply. What he should have said was, 'I like to think there always are ...possibilities.'

Some one could always reply back to him: You need not fear the cancellation banana.

Hearing that it's not in high res is problematic - we delivered the album in 24-bit 48kHz.

I'll look into this....

Any update on this?

Podcast interview with Joel McNeely about his work on season three. Pretty bad interviewers, but it is great to hear McNeely.

I may be in the minority, but I absolutely adore John Debney’s Orville music the most, probably because I yearn for the days of Cutthroat Island and The Scorpion King. I absolutely can’t get enough of these scores and pray for another season!

Really happy I held off. That's exactly the position I didn't want to be in.

Though to be honest, I'm really surprised this is happening. I almost bought the existing release.

And it seems the new High-Res version is ONLY $20. Wow, I feel ripped off by Qobuz. And they have the gall to still be selling the old version (and still for $40 for lesser quality)! There are 3 versions of the exact same album currently listed on their site lol...

Well, so, the hi-res version is here, and it's lovely to have (though I'm not convinced I can actually tell the difference between 16-bit 44.1Khz and 24-bit 48kHz)

But this album's strangest anomaly is still present, which is the dramatic variation in volume across the 4+ hours. Different composers' works seems to have been recorded differently (the Debney cues feel more "pinched" than McNeely's for example) and there's a whopping variation between loud and soft material across the board, which needs constant volume re-adjustment.

The music is wonderful, and I love having this album, but I'm struggling to really enjoy it.
