I am still thinking about Franz Waxman's Sayonara quite often. I hope that it will get a good release with better sound some day. I can survive with what I have I suppose, but since I consider this to be one of the great scores, I would have liked to have a complete release of it with better sound. is that the one where half the album sounds fine but the other half has really compromised sound?

An improved or new recording of THE NUN'S STORY would be great too. I believe the only complete release is the Stanyon recording from the early 1990s! That's not complete - it's the Warner Bros. album. The sound is not good and a shadow of what it should be. I can only tell you, and do NOT ask me further questions about it, that Warners threw out the original three-track tapes to that and much more. They were 'retrieved' from the trash bin and exist. But Warners is impossible to deal with so that's the end of that.

Sometimes the wheels of film score restoration move slowly. Have faith, brothers. Have faith. MV This September we'll arrive at the 10th anniversary of this hopeful post... should we still have faith, MV? And for Spirit of St. Louis? I would love even a spark of hope. Yavar

Oh wow. I've never seen someone write *that* gushingly about this score. IMO Waxman's greatest was Sunset Blvd. but I do love it when many Golden Age composers would allow some Asian flavors into their scores... even composers I generally dislike such as Herbert Stothart -- Dragon Seed is easily my favorite score of his, maybe the only one I really like. And I generally consider Victor Young a talented tunesmith whose underscore usually bores me... but The Left Hand of God is easily my favorite Young score to listen to all the way through. I admire everything Hugo Friedhofer ever wrote but my easy favorite of his entire strong output is The Rains of Ranchipur. Considering I LOVE almost all Franz Waxman, chances are that getting a complete and significantly better-sounding release of Sayonara is likely to nudge it WAY up my Waxman rankings. Yavar
