I am still thinking about Franz Waxman's Sayonara quite often.

I hope that it will get a good release with better sound some day. I can survive with what I have I suppose, but since I consider this to be one of the great scores, I would have liked to have a complete release of it with better sound.

is that the one where half the album sounds fine but the other half has really compromised sound?

An improved or new recording of THE NUN'S STORY would be great too. I believe the only complete release is the Stanyon CD recording from the early 1990s!

That's not complete - it's the Warner Bros. album. The sound is not good and a shadow of what it should be. I can only tell you, and do NOT ask me further questions about it, that Warners threw out the original three-track tapes to that and much more. They were 'retrieved' from the trash bin and exist. But Warners is impossible to deal with so that's the end of that.

Didn’t an expanded (but not complete) version get released at some point?

Perhaps on a terrible-sounding boot.

Only the Stanyan LP from the mid-70s was identical with the old Warner Bros. album.
However, the Stanyan CD from 1991 was indeed an expanded edition with about 20 minutes of additional music which hadn´t been available before on LP or CD. Here you can see the track listing which is not the same as the one on the Stanyan LP or the old WB LP from 1959:
https://www.discogs.com/de/Franz-Waxman-The-Nuns-Story/release/10194664

Of course, even this expanded CD didn´t contain the complete score which could only be heard on a boot double CD which appeared at the end of the 90s.

The 1991 Stanyan CD was digitally mastered by the famous Steve Hoffman and you should read his very interesting comments about all the misfortunes and complications which happened during the production of this CD:

Sometimes the wheels of film score restoration move slowly.

Have faith, brothers. Have faith.

MV

This September we'll arrive at the 10th anniversary of this hopeful post... should we still have faith, MV?

And for Spirit of St. Louis?

I would love even a spark of hope. smile

I adore this score. It is not only Waxman's best score, but one of the greatest film scores ever written. It is a pity that most of the greatest scores seldom get the kind of attention that they deserve.

It would be interesting to see a complete release of this score with better sound. I doubt that it will happen, but I hope it will!

Oh wow. I've never seen someone write *that* gushingly about this score. IMO Waxman's greatest was Sunset Blvd. but I do love it when many Golden Age composers would allow some Asian flavors into their scores... even composers I generally dislike such as Herbert Stothart -- Dragon Seed is easily my favorite score of his, maybe the only one I really like. And I generally consider Victor Young a talented tunesmith whose underscore usually bores me... but The Left Hand of God is easily my favorite Young score to listen to all the way through.

I admire everything Hugo Friedhofer ever wrote but my easy favorite of his entire strong output is The Rains of Ranchipur.

Considering I LOVE almost all Franz Waxman, chances are that getting a complete and significantly better-sounding release of Sayonara is likely to nudge it WAY up my Waxman rankings.

Franz Waxman…great Golden Age/Silver Age composer. Numerous Awards. Greatest work imo Taras Bulba. Though I enjoy many of his scores to me it’s not even close.

I never agreed that Sunset Blvd (or Taras Bulba for that matter) was Waxman's best. I know that is the popular opinion, but I don't align with it.

I think that this is Waxman's best score. It it his most memorable and consistent. It is also his most remarkable score in context of the film itself. Irving Berlin's melody is a part of the appeal of this score, but Waxman did an amazing job at weaving that melody throughout the entire score and also composing his own wonderful stuff to go with it.

It is really underrated and should be regarded as a major achievement. To me, it is a pantheon film score, probably even top 25 of all time.

Merci. I bring it up because Night has mentioned “score” as in underscoring the picture and my impression is that you are mostly talking “soundtrack” as in listening experience on its own and devoid of the viewing experience. The two become interchangeable for all intents when the picture has been viewed and discussion ensues under that context. And you have me now wanting to see The Rains Of Ranchipur for that reason because I cannot imagine anything Hugo F has done could possibly top his The Best Years Of Our Lives under any context.

Fascinating notes on the Sayonara score (from the old LP) by Royal S. Brown (if the text is too small to read, you can open up the image in a seperate tab and click on it):

And thank you for the bump that compelled me to listen once again to that gorgeous arrangement of Mr. Berlin's tune. smile
