Quite the extensive preview available on Amazon there.

I only have one gripe - although the majority of film music is written by dudes, it does not appear that on the list of 100 scores, and an additional 100 scores - there are none written by women.

Just curious but what score written by a woman would you have included on a top 100 list, without it being a token because of gender? I greatly support female composers but the problem is that there have been so few of them, and they have been given comparatively few opportunities in the industry. If I am being honest with myself in my rankings, I can't think of a single film score by a female composer which would make my top 100 list either. Plenty of scores that I love, but not quite top 100 material when there's so much incredible stuff it's already hard to narrow down. I can definitely say that on my list of top 50 film composers, there are a few female names at least. But single scores on a top 100 is much more difficult. Rachel Portman's Never Let Me Go might come the closest.

In concert hall music it's actually easier as there have been more female composers who got opportunities. (If I were listing 100 Greatest Operas...I would actually include Portman's The Little Prince, which might just be her greatest work.)

Now if we were talking about favorite-scored *TV*, Shirley Walker would surely rate a prominent spot. Like, top 5 composers, top 5 shows. Batman/Superman TAS and Space: Above and Beyond would both easily make my list of top 10 best scored shows of all time.

There were women in the orchestras.

In the spirit of Thor I'll point out that not a single non-English-language film is mentioned in the blurb. If that's the case for the whole book it will call into question their gushy sales pitch "100 Greatest Film Scores will be of interest to fans of movie music everywhere."

Shirley Walker - BATMAN MASK OF THE PHANTASM
Debbie Wiseman - HAUNTED
LESBIAN VAMPIRE KILLERS
Elizabeth Lutyens - THE SKULL

These great scores/composers offered with tongue only slightly in cheek.

Yavar, glad to hear you plug Portman's enthralling and lyrical LITTLE PRINCE opera. I think it's her greatest work as well.

This book should be good. MacDonald is a very astute writer.

Btw it is very weird that the topic of film music has generated substantial writings* from the academic press..all of which is worthless. Naturally.

*avoid Sergio Micelli at all costs!

One-time conductor of the Utah Symphony Orchestra. Recordings include Korngold's The Adventures of Robin Hood and The Sea Hawk – also a compilation of suites from the first three Star Wars movies. All top-notch recordings. But, of course, you all knew that!

This doesn't look good at all - Pirates of the Caribbean, Titanic, The Last of the Mohicans, Up and A Beautiful Mind as five of the top 100 film scores of all time?! Wow, I don't know what to say if someone seriously thinks that they are top 100 of all time material.

E.T. may be a great film score, but I still wouldn't cover the book in that material as the peak of film music even if it's maybe top 100 of all time material.

I can't think of a single film score by a female composer which would make my top 100 list either.

Same here. I think Mica Levi's Under the Skin and Yoko Kanno's Our Little Sister might come closest (aside from maybe Delia Derbyshire's best unreleased score), but that's more like top 500 of all time, not top 100.
