the human eyeball at standard sofa distance can barely process 4k, so 8k is 100% gimmick. I've heard the same of 4K. People still watch DVD's, and 4K just got off the ground, are people really gonna keep re-buying their movie collection every 5 years? I love new technology, but at this point it is preying upon the stupidity and materialism of people and nothing more. I mean, there is not a single human being that can see any difference between 4k and 8k. And some cannot see much difference between 1080p and 4k, depending on how close you sit. I still watch some DVD's because they are not on blu ray, like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and I always surprise myself how good it looks.

The ability to watch DVDs has to do in part with the upscaling that we have in most machines. But I have watched 720p content on a large 1080p TV and though on occasion I can see some indication of the low resolution, it is perfectly watchable. Most people have barely started to understand what 4K is and now will have a hard time being convinced that 8K is anything but a gimmick that is likely to lead to 12K or 16K in a few years. I foresee 8K being something used for the massive home theater setups and connected to some sort of subscription service that gives you access to that kind of content.

This market is awful nothing like audio - entry, mid, top equipment - you should know exactly what your buying, err, nope. What I hate the most the consumer will buy 8k - he/she needs too possibly then upgrade a new blu-ray player & recording that's an unknown. 4-5 years maybe at the moment this industry piss taking, too fast, I thought mobiles were robberies also too note companies will have uhd-8k platforms on PPV events that will hike £, i.e. boxing, ufc/mma, no thanks.

Meanwhile, two years ago I finally got a TV with a USB port. My tv is a big box effort from 20 years ago. As wide as it is deep. Never had a day of trouble with it. Columbo looks ace on it.

Hey, I hear 'ya! Favorite t.v. in my life was my big old Sony from about 20 years ago. Sounds pretty much as you described yours. When I left New York, I sold it to a fellow employee and watched him drive away with it in the back of his truck. I miss that set.

At a viewing distance of about 6-7 feet even our 55 inch Samsung 4K SUHD upconverts DVD images to a pretty nice image, depending on the basic quality of the transfer. You really don't truly appreciate the sharpness of a blu-ray until you're sitting about 3 1/2 feet from a screen that size. I have to admit some of the Costco displays of 75 inch and up screens running native 4K material on an OLED screen do look pretty eye-popping--but there was no way my wife was going to okay a investment in that range. You're still going to be at the mercy of the basic quality of the blu-ray (or 4K blu-ray) transfer. The blu-ray of THE GREAT ESCAPE remains extremely disappointing. On the other hand, the four year older THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN is astonishingly sharp and vital for it's age. And the latest blu-ray of SPARTACUS is amazing.
