I didn't mind his score to Megamind, which I thought was decent, or his contributions to Zimmer's Sherlock Holmes scores, which are both excellent and a lot of fun. However, Zimmer being involved with all three projects could play a factor into those. Can't comment on Mission Impossible: Fallout because I haven't seen or heard it yet. His Pacific Rim: Uprising score was underwhelming in the film. Not to mention vastly inferior to Djawadi's original, which I thought was fun and one of Djawadi's best efforts. When Djawadi's Pacific Rim theme appeared in the sequel it made the score/scene a little more engaging for a brief moment. The majority of the movie/score was otherwise lacking it, imo.

I'm just disappointed that Beltrami was replaced on a big project (this is an Ang Lee/Will Smith movie after all) like this. He hasn't scored any big projects this year. I'll also admit that the Gemini Man trailer didn't really appeal to me when I saw it during Avengers: Endgame, but Beltrami being involved as composer could've gotten me some interest in it.

Like I said before I got nothing against Balfe. I just find him to be an uninspired choice. He seems to be the go to guy when TPTB replace a composer on a major projects.

The semi-official Beltrami site lists on a May 27 entry:
"Marco Beltrami has abandoned scoring duties on Ang Lee's upcoming GEMINI MAN. No further details have been published and new composer is yet to be announced as well."

If that's correct (and not poor word choice), then I assume the experience was so bad, he didn't finish the score and walked.

Yikes! That's not good! If he wrote anything I'd be interested in hearing it. I'm always up for more Beltrami!

Slightly off topic...
Okay so now that I've finally watched Mission Impossible: Fallout. I can give my opinion on Balfe's score in the context of the movie. So overall (from what I noticed in the movie) I didn't mind Balfe's score at all. His score suited the movie and tone fine, imo. So in other words I didn't dislike what I heard in the movie. And I enjoyed the movie as well. Props to Cruise for going above and beyond performing these edge of your seat stunts for our entertainment.

So again I don't think Balfe is a bad composer at all. Just was underwhelmed about Beltrami leaving this project.

  • Geez...what a load of mean and negative bastards there are on this forum...

I look on the bright side and think,"Maybe this will be his Steamboy, and then I can finally say, 'Well, at least he has his Steamboy'".

But it doesn't help that his name sounds like an 80s reference for puking. If I may suggest "Beef Slabchunk" or "Punch Kickchoke".

So you mean STEAMBOY was Jablonsky's best just because it was an orchestral score?

I don't remember mentioning anything about an orchestra. More like it was melodically sound and it helped to tell the story. As did Koyaanisqatsi.
