I hated the movie and one of the many reasons was the music. It kept pulling me out of the story. So until recently I was convinced Powell's score was horrible. Then I decided to listen to it, now I forgot most of movie. I'm blown away! This is one of the most epic adventure scores I've ever heard!
The only explanation I have for hating it in the film is either because it was mixed and edited poorly or the lack of relate-ability of the characters and events made it sound like it was trying too hard to emulate something that wasn't there.

I watched some YouTube review where they mentioned how much they hated the score because "it was trying to hard". I guess you can't put lipstick on a pig. Though the score is still fabulous. The expanded edition Ive heard thus far brings it up to HTTYD levels.

30.49 GBP for the high resolution FLAC download in the U.K. Ouch.

I'll see if i can find a way to order through US HDTracks as unfortunately there's no way I can support this release at that price. I see Qobuz has the CD quality version at £20.99 which is still higher than the US Hi-Res version!

All hail the digital-only future.

ok, So those in the UK can purchase from US HDTracks quite easily. Last time I used them years ago, they used your IP Location to block you. That seems to have gone.

So from there with the 20% Discount code they have at the moment, the HD version cost me half of what the UK platforms are asking. So brought and supported. More please Disney - but sort out your UK pricing.

I feel like a chump. I didn't check hdtracks.com before buying as I presumed the block on UK buyers would still be in place. My login there still seems to work OK, so I'll need to remember that in future.

What happened to "The Adventures of Han"?

Also, as the tiniest nitpick ever, why are the M cues labelled in film order instead of per "reel"? I only ask because this is how R2-D2 got his name.

  • I guess you can't put lipstick on a pig.

Do or do not. There is no "can't"... especially where pig lips are concerned.

Powell's music is swashbuckly enough for the adventures of a space pirate, so I don't understand the criticism of "trying too hard" (actually, I've never understood that fallacy).

I dare say, that as a piece written and recorded for the original album by Williams, it might not have been possible, or perhaps even desirable, for it to be part of this release.

I loved the film. And I think the score is effortless. I think more people would enjoy the film if a) it was lit properly and b) they had skipped "this is why he's called Solo!" Especially the last part.

One thing though reminds me of when I had lunch sitting next to Alan Ruck. And after he left I and everyone I was with all just hemorrhaged the Ferris Bueller quotes we had been holding in. That's what The Kessel Run in Less Than 12 Parsecs feel like. "Screw it! I'm playing ALL of my favorite parts and you can't STOP me!" Because the rest of the score showed so much restraint it's just a delight.

I actually prefer Powell's uses of the Han theme to the formal John WIlliams' concert arrangement.

Me too, it has more power and drive behind it. No pun intended.

Never dawned on me the Kessle Run cue uses themes from Empire Strikes Back. I found the orchestration haphazard on the OST so I cut it out of my playlist.

Don't remember if this was asked or not. Is all the music on this deluxe edition heard in the film or does this contain, alts, unused music?

It contains unused music, sure. Any bits Howard elected to dial down in the final mix. See "Proxima" and "Oksana Floren" for good examples.

As for alternates, yes and no. The DE presents the entire score from top to bottom as was initially recorded. In the final film, a few very short inserts were mixed in to fit a changing cut in some of the action scenes, though they don't really improve the outside-of-the-film listening experience whatsoever and I am glad they aren't here.

The alternate music for Qi'Ra Flying away at the end of the film is the only real lengthy and truly different alternate, being completely different than the film/DE version, and it's on the OST.
