Jerry Goldsmith: ALIEN But Horner's ALIENS is terrific and perhaps my favorite James Horner score, but because of cues like "Face Huggers" more than "Bishop's Countdown". Great score.

This is a tough call. The A L I E N films have been spoiled for great music. For me, it has to come down to either Goldsmith's Alien or Goldenthal's Alien 3. They're both such marvelous scores in their own ways and so very perfect for their respective films. I feel like I could go either way here on any given day. I also love Frizzell's shrieking electronics and haunting ambience in Resurrection. Again, just a perfect score for the film's aesthetic and a real delight to listen to apart from the film. While I love Horner in general, I've never grown as personally attached to Aliens, either the film or the score, but there's no denying there's some stellar action material here, including "Futile Escape," "Going After Newt," and "Bishop's Countdown" (which for some time basically became the anthem for movie trailers). Fantastic main title as well. Brian Tyler did a fantastic job with Aliens vs. Predators: Requiem too. That score is just nonstop propulsive action like only Tyler does best. I probably listen to this one on CD as much as any of the others.

ALIENS by a wide margin. Amazing score by Horner in his prime as he honed his themes and created some of the most trailer worthy music of the era. ALIEN 3: depressing and oppressive, like the film itself. Not an easy listen, but none of these are. I wouldn't be playing these in the car for my friends.... ALIEN: I have to admit, I like portions of it, but I find a lot if it kinda dull. The climax is blistering, though. ALIEN RESURRECTION: Good theme. One or two really nice cues. Otherwise, it doesn't stick in the memory. None of the rest count for me. I like Brian Tyler's score because I like his "loud bombast" more than most people. The rest of the scores just lie there.
