I think the Tamarind Seed is nothing but a series of missed opportunities. The Silva release i am grateful for, and while the sound is not as good as i would like, I know that they did their best with it. The most pleasant surprise from this release is the first Play It Again song--what a delight, what great lyrics, and the arrangements for it show the tune's noirish possibilities. For me, the first missed opportunity is that when the film was released Barry never had the opportunity to assemble and/or re-record a proper ALBUM with pristine sound for that sweeping Play It Again opening. If Barry re-recorded, he could have condensed the tension/suspense tracks into one piece, using the different variations. He also could have sequenced the album, mixing in the better source cues with the vocal, suspense, and dramatic cues. I care nothing about "film order" sequencing. I also don't need every sliver of notes for a score. The second missed opportunity was when Barry re-recorded the theme for his Play It Again album. I think the entire album is a mis-fire prompted by Barry's huge success with The Persuaders, so some of the PIA tracks work well with ensembles appropriate to their themes, but on others not so much. "Play It Again" isn't even mixed properly with the melody overshadowed by the background--the same happens with "Lolita."

Thanks, Steve. I saw that post a few pages back, but blew past it because it seemed to be missing half the Silva tracks. I see now what you were doing. It should work well as a base for me. Then I'll season a little more to my own taste with the remaining cues Cheers!.

Wow, "Stravinsky" sure seemed to have an axe to grind. (Why would you get a score that you feel so negative about? Was the CD that much different from what you expected it to be?) I personally think the score is very short the way it is, and the concentration of the action cues in sequence feels right. The Nic Raine conducted suite on Silva Screen is an excellent distillation of the score and one of the best Barry listenings. That suite makes one longer cue out of these action cues, which just sounds "right".
