Indeed no need to apologize, Stephen. I personally like it when different if not contradictory opinions are being exchanged on this board. Maybe I’m most of the time used to CD’s conceived in a rather logical and coherent manner - on a strictly musical basis that is -, so that this one clearly appears to be lightyears away from this ‘standard’ conception.

But again, what matters the most is that the music is truly excellent and I would never dissuade anyone from buying this CD just because of the failed sequencing.

I think the Tamarind Seed is nothing but a series of missed opportunities.

The Silva release i am grateful for, and while the sound is not as good as i would like, I know that they did their best with it. The most pleasant surprise from this release is the first Play It Again song--what a delight, what great lyrics, and the arrangements for it show the tune's noirish possibilities.

For me, the first missed opportunity is that when the film was released Barry never had the opportunity to assemble and/or re-record a proper ALBUM with pristine sound for that sweeping Play It Again opening. If Barry re-recorded, he could have condensed the tension/suspense tracks into one piece, using the different variations. He also could have sequenced the album, mixing in the better source cues with the vocal, suspense, and dramatic cues.

I care nothing about "film order" sequencing. I also don't need every sliver of notes for a score.

The second missed opportunity was when Barry re-recorded the theme for his Play It Again album. I think the entire album is a mis-fire prompted by Barry's huge success with The Persuaders, so some of the PIA tracks work well with ensembles appropriate to their themes, but on others not so much. "Play It Again" isn't even mixed properly with the melody overshadowed by the background--the same happens with "Lolita."

You have to be joking! It's a fabulous album and track A6: Lolita is a highlight.

If there is a weak track, for me, it's We Have All the Time in the World but this is probably in comparison with the OST recordings and the superb Columbia/CBS interpretation as released on his album Ready When You Are, J.B (1969). As with The Tamarind Seed, I've known this album since its 1974 release. Initially I was surprised because it didn't sound the same as his earlier Columbia/CBS recordings but it didn't take many plays to win me over.

Another highlight is, of course, Love Among the Ruins ... downright gorgeous!

Play It Again? Most definitely smile

Finally got around to ripping this and listening to it last night.

I don't have any big beefs with the sound quality, or more ubiquitous vocal tracks. It's just the sequencing that's not doing it for me.

Has anyone come up with a reordering that they feel provides a stronger overall listen?

I put this faux LP together as if it was your typical Barry LP released at the time. It required a bit of editing in audacity though. I combined some of the suspense cue's together to create longer tracks.

Side 1
#01] The Tamarind Seed Main Title (pitch/speed corrected)
#02] Judith Remembers
#03] Holiday Source Cue #1
#04] A Drive on the Island
#05] File 23
#06] Holiday Source Cue #2
#07] The Tamarind Seed Main Theme (Alternate version 2)

Side 2
#08] Play It Again (Single version)
#09] Defection
#10] Airport / Plane Swap
#11] Holiday Source Cue #3
#12] Interception Attempt / The KGB Prepares
#13] Napalm Boat / Burning Bungalow
#14] The Tamarind Seed Main Theme (Alternate version 1)

Thanks, Steve.

I saw that post a few pages back, but blew past it because it seemed to be missing half the Silva tracks.
I see now what you were doing.

It should work well as a base for me. Then I'll season a little more to my own taste with the remaining cues

Cheers!.

The speed difference between the main title on the film and the CD is about 5 seconds as far as I can tell, which is approximately the same difference you'd get comparing a PAL video to a film copy.

I wonder if this indicates the source of the main title was a PAL format video.

It's not a speed difference most people would notice and indeed I hadn't noticed it till pointed out.

Ergo, whilst not ideal, not a deal breaker.

Cheers

The main title speed/pitch was fine when it left Mooro and me. If it's wrong on the CD, it must have been 'fixed' later on in the chain. smile

Wow, "Stravinsky" sure seemed to have an axe to grind. (Why would you get a score that you feel so negative about? Was the CD that much different from what you expected it to be?)
I personally think the score is very short the way it is, and the concentration of the action cues in sequence feels right.
The Nic Raine conducted suite on Silva Screen is an excellent distillation of the score and one of the best Barry listenings. That suite makes one longer cue out of these action cues, which just sounds "right".

Whew..thought I had missed this.

Snagged one from Deep Discount in the US and it's on the way.

Listening to it now and find it very rewarding.

A nice addition to my Barry collection. Thanks Silva Screen.

Next.... Moonraker deluxe??? Please!

Great heads up, thanks, Roy. To make the delivery charge more efficient I added a couple of Blu-rays, Fellini’s Casanova and giallo The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire.
