SEASON 1:

The original 1977 series. And no, I will not be covering the latest iteration.

Attention readers: I have been implementing a system that is nothing more than a note to myself; for cues that I want to include in a suite one day, for now on I will denote them with ^ symbol. It has no special meaning to anyone else but myself. No, the lack of an up arrow symbol doesn't mean the cue is bad (it just may have too much SFX or FX for suite use or just isn't worth my time to edit and include). Hence forth this system will be in all future threads and pre-exiting threads that I go back to for missed episodes. Anything in ( ) are just notes to the arrow and you need not bother with that. The system does not mean that I will make a suite or that one has been made, it's simply for my own reference if and when I do decide to.

  • "Return to Fantasy Island" (another feature-length episode)
    By: Laurence Rosenthal
    https://www.solie.org/alibrary/FantasyIsland_102ReturntoFantasyIsland.html

As I have found a number of false Rosenthal credits on IMDb for the show, I believe this may be his final effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.^
  • 8:29 in.^
  • 14:22 in.
  • 16:23 in.^
  • 18:55 in.
  • 22:15 in.^
  • 24:05 in.^
  • 24:42 in.^
  • 26:44 in.^
  • 28:54 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^

  • 53:25 in.^
  • 58:02 in.^
  • 1:05:05 in.^
  • 1:12:46 in.^
  • 1:25:35 in. The score pauses for a few seconds a couple of times and keeps going to the end of the episode.^

The first one has a slow-moving snake, this one has a slow-moving spider. Yet that doesn't stop the ladies from not shutting the fuck up. Oh I hate it.

Damnit, Mr. Roarke fooled me! Not often a TV series does that anymore, and you usually have to go back to older series.

    (NtM: 43:21)

Mr. Roarke: "We are such stuff as dreams are made of."

"You don't leave me with any choice."
Mr. Roarke: "That's the prerogative of having your own island, isn't it?"

Mr. Roarke: "No questions on Fantasy Island, Tattoo."

Thank you for doing this. I adore the music for this series. The theme is one of my all-time favorites! The dreamy opening from the pilot is so nice and perfectly sets the mood. Rosenthal in top form.

Maybe a soundtrack could be a possibility for Intrada since they seem to have a good relationship with Rosenthal.

    By: Elliot Kaplan
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohn_RxyaCy4

    Highlights:
  • 1:00 in. I'm surprised, but it sounds like they are re-recording the opening theme for every episode so far, with little differences, and then it starts splitting off for the introductions. And the cue after the commercial break.^
  • 8:30 in.
  • 13:28 in. The disco/soft rock source music piece. It's a long piece, probably about four minutes in length.^

  • 41:48 in. A long cue that goes to the end of the episode (probably about eight minutes long).^

For the guys here: 7:32 in. You're welcome.

    "The Prince / The Sheriff"

  • 6:05 in.^

  • 10:34 in.^
  • 14:42 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^(both)
  • 17:40 in.^
  • 19:02 in.^
  • 20:23 in. Short dramatic piece, immediately followed by disco source music (which is long, maybe around three minutes). and.^(all three; pick back up at 24:40)
  • 28:39 in.^
  • 32:08 in.^

  • 36:59 in.^
  • 38:33 in.^
  • 40:29 in.^
  • 44:28 in.^
  • 45:49 in.^

This score has a good variety of styles: western music, dramatic music, romantic material, string leads pieces, disco, more. Not a single episode score from the series was nominated for or won an Emmy.

Dack Rambo -- now there's a manly name. Followed by Guy Stockwell. Two manly names in a row.

Burke: "Loosing your own personal dignity; that's a hell of a price to pay."

Mr. Roarke: "This is my country, my realm, and here I am to be obeyed."

    Out-of-context quote...
Mr. Roarke: "Could that be little Peter grown so tall?"

    "Family Reunion / Voodoo"
    By: Elliot Kaplan

    Highlights:
  • 1:29 in.^
  • 5:27 in.^
  • 9:18 in.^
  • 11:01 in.^
  • 14:49 in.^
  • 20:05 in. I think I'm hearing rub rods in this cue and not a waterphone. And the cue after the commercial break.^(both)
  • 21:41 in.
  • 22:45 in.^
  • 24:39 in.^
  • 26:58 in.
  • 32:04 in.^
  • 42:36 in.
  • 46:33 in.^

You know, there are two ways to look at what Mr. Roarke did: He helped the family for a cheap price of fifty-one dollars. The other way: he gladly took fifty-one dollars from two kids.

I despise these "voodoo is real" episodes of TV series. Said it before in other threads, gotta say it again.

A random thought popped into my head because a cue at 40:10 sounded like Henry Mancini: Wouldn't it have been great if Mancini had scored an episode?

"Wait a minute, you can't just leave us here."
Mr. Roarke: "Oh, I assure you I can, Mr. Cranston."

Mr. Cranston: "This is absurd. This is incredibly."
Mr. Roarke: "Indeed. This is Fantasy Island."

Boy (talking about adults): "What can they do alone they can't do with us?"
Girl: "Are you sure you're thirteen?"

Mr. Roarke (to Tattoo): "You do have a cash register for a heart."

"Lady of the Evening / The Racer"

  • 35:35 in.^
  • 38:09 in.^
  • 42:01 in.^
  • 44:40 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^

(Note to Me: 22:46, 29:12 [parts])

Mr. Roarke: "Ah, Tattoo, you have a, um, smudge of something under your nose."
Tattoo: "This is no smudge; I'm growing a mustache."

Woman (walks up to Tattoo, bringing a towel to his face): "Here, let me wipe that off for you."
    Tattoo: "Wipe what?"
Woman: "Well, you have something ... Oh. My goodness. You're growing it."

Man (to Tattoo): "You have something on your lip."

Mr. Roarke: "Tattoo, would I ever deceive a guest?"
Tattoo: "Does a duck ever make quack quack in the water?"

    Guest-starring Don Knotts.

Featuring some comedic material and some material you would associate with a private detective.

It's a shame Kaplan never did an episode of "Dynasty". He seems to be built for that kind of musical lush style.

Things we know about Tattoo: He's a horny little midget, he goes to the disco, and he consistently loses games hundreds of times to Mr. Roarke.

    * = Featuring MV playing checkers.

Tattoo: "If I'm going to give back money, it's got to be dangerous."

Mr. Roarke: "You see, Tattoo, being the owner of Fantasy Island means never having to say you're sorry."

"King for a Day / Instant Family"
    By: Elliot Kaplan

  • 30:06 in.^
  • 35:28 in.^
  • 38:28 in.^
  • 43:30 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^

A couple of firsts in this episode: one guy decides to stay in the fantasy permanently, and we see Mr. Roarke inside a grocery store, as opposed to outside or in his office.

17:09 in: I wonder if those string players are real sessions players.

    (Note to Me: 1:20/gif, 33:59)

Mr. Roarke: "You asked a King to fix the plumbing?"
Tattoo: "Well, the Queen didn't know how."

"You see, mother, being a house wife is easy if you let it be." (hahahahaaa)

(there are actually crazy people who think stupid crap like that in real life. I great example is a year or two ago some nutjob wrote an article saying that we need to seek consent from babies to change their diapers, that the parents needs to look them in the eye and ask the baby -- which can't speak and shits in diapers -- for permission. Yeah, ah huh. So, if the baby could speak and said "No", I don't think the judge hearing your child-neglect case will agree with the baby... [if I remember, I'll look up the article and post it, or at least the audio of a radio show hosting making fun of it])

"Fool for a Client / Double Your Pleasure"
    By: Elliot Kaplan

    Highlights:
  • 4:19 in. The source music. And the score which immediately follows it.^(both)
  • About 8:10 in.^
  • 10:25 in.^
  • 11:06 in.^
  • 15:20 in.^
  • 19:27 in.^
  • 21:21 in. The source music. I don't quite know how to describe the style, but I like it.^
  • 23:39 in.^
  • 26:07 in. The disco source music. And the score which immediately follows it.^(first)
  • 32:03 in.^
  • 33:14 in.^
  • 34:39 in.^
  • 38:07 in.^
  • 39:35 in.^
  • 42:05 in. The source music. And the score which immediately follows it (and the cue after the commercial break).^

I think I figured out the twist of the twins plot, while the disco cue was playing, let's see if I was right...
    YES:
    NO: ? ?
(I thought there were no twins -- it was the same girl, testing him, quickly changing and putting on an act)

Mr. Roarke: "The French have a name for it: menage-et-trois."
Tattoo: "I have a name of it, too: wow!"

Nina: "Nothing worth doing is worth doing until after the sun sets."

Tattoo: "Happiness is a cracker with caviar on it." (said no one who's tried caviar ever)

  • 37:36 in.^
  • 39:15 in.^
  • 42:33 in.^
  • 44:42 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^(both)

This is the first episode where there is no score while Mr. Roarke is describing the customers coming off the plane. I wonder if that was planned, or the score was just dialed down to zero.

I love that little character touch, where the customer says he found a twenty-dollar bill and hold it out, and immediately we see Tattoo checking his pockets to make sure he didn't lose one. LOL, good job writers.

For the guys here: 27:15 in: three hot girls in swimwear. You're welcome.

I really enjoyed Kaplan's Arabic dancing music. It's full sounding and forwardly aggressive. I can't imagine skipping any of it on a set of season one scoring.

Tattoo: "Boss, what is it?" seeing a large box with a gift ribbon around it.
Mr. Roarke: "It's for you, from all of us on Fantasy Island. You see, we realize that sometimes the ones we love the most, are the first ones we take for granted. It's a token of respect, and appreciation for you, my friend."

  • 40:41 in.^
  • 42:50 in.^
  • 43:40 in.^
  • 47:50 in.^

On a set of season one scoring, I'd probably only take select cues from this episode score.

I think this episode would have been better had it been Angela Lansbury playing the old lady.

    Tattoo: "He looks very nervous."
Mr. Roarke: "Oh, really? Well, he wasn't too nervous to send us his certified check for ten-thousand dollars."
Tattoo: "Oh, I love nervous people. They have a lot of energy."

Tattoo: "Well, you know me boss -- work, work, work. Good-bye, boss. Come on, girls!"

    Continuing SEASON 2:

"Return / The Toughest Man Alive"
    By: Charles Albertine
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4jw339

    Highlights:
  • About 2:10 in.
  • 4:27 in.^
  • 9:25 in. Including parody of the theme music to "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" -- even down toe the punctuated male vocals.^
  • 17:53 in.^
  • 19:05 in.^
  • 20:36 in. The tropical source music for the restaurant.^
  • 24:59 in. Comedic material opens this cue, which then ends in a short bit of TGtBatU parody.^
  • 26:07 in.^
  • 27:13 in.^
  • 28:06 in. Romantic strings-lead montage cue.^
  • 33:25 in. The growling brass, timpani and guiro for the Captain, is an interesting change of musical pace and I like it.^
  • 36:12 in.^
  • 37:23 in.^
  • 46:53 in.

Charles Albertine isn't a composer I knew much about, in fact probably just a handful of less of TV scoring, but he's certainly impressing me on this series.

Fantasy Island is a confusing place, so far. You think it's a small island that Mr. Roarke owns and runs, but it turns out it's a large island with residents, a grocery store, and who knows what else. Yet he still in charge somehow. And how he does what he does with the compliance of the islanders, is also confusing. But he does seem to be benevolent, caring about people's feelings and lives, and wants to help. But can still take the money of two little kids. Yeah, still remember that.

24:39 in: MV and his wife going for a cruise.

    "The Appointment / Mr. Tattoo"
    By: Harry Betts
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4jw33a

This is presumably the only effort by Betts for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 2:16 in.^
  • 4:15 in. The series' main theme with a percussion background. And the cue after the commercial break.^
  • 7:28 in.^
  • 8:39 in.^
  • About 12:15/13:13/25:46/33:08 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^
  • 16:04 in.^
  • 25:03 in.^ *
  • 26:55 in.^
  • 32:20 in.^
  • 34:42 in.^
  • 36:18 in. There is a two or three second lull and the music picks back up.^
  • 46:29 in.^

I really liked what Betts did. It's a shame he apparently didn't score any more episodes; I would have liked to have heard more from him on the series. There are some season five and season six episodes where the composer credit are not solved -- no loads of the episodes I can find. I solved a number of them using loads, to update IMDb two or three weeks ago.

    * = Tattoo: Cock blocker.

"The Flight of the Great Yellow Bird / The Island of Lost Women"

  • 32:46 in.^
  • 33:54 in.^
  • 39:19 in.^
  • 43:21 in.

Now we know Fantasy Island is so large it takes a plane to fly to the far side of the island. I don't know how Mr. Roarke runs an island this large. I suspect he's largely hands-off in his approach, dealing with things when he has to.

Can I have my own village of hot blonde girls wanting to desperately bang a Birdman?
    No? Well, fuck.

    Highlights:
  • 1:29 in.^
  • 4:24 in.^
  • 6:20 in.^
  • 8:36 in. Including more pleasant woodwinds and acoustic guitar. Kaplan is really showing off in this cue.^
  • 23:29 in.^
  • 39:46 in.^
  • 44:03 in.^
  • 46:07 in.^

On a set of season two scoring, I'd only take select cues from the highlights above.

Guest-starring John Rubinstein, who we also knows used to be a composer. I guess he probably tried to finagle an episode for himself to score, but failed.

Don Knotts returns for another role. Some other well known character actors, too.

First episode where somebody tries to murder Mr. Roarke. All his powers didn't help him and he didn't use them.

"Fantasy Island" Wardrobe Head: "And you get a bikini, and you get a bikini, and yu get a bikini!"

    "Spending Spree / The Hunted"

    Highlights:
  • 2:02 in.^

  • 24:30 in.^
  • 25:41 in.^
  • 27:31 in. And the cue after the commercial break -- a long moderately dramatic and tense piece with percussion as a man is hunted down to be killed.^
  • 31:50 in.^
  • 33:04 in.^
  • 34:27 in.^
  • 35:32 in.^
  • 3:701 in.^
  • 38:48 in. More tense dramatic music for the hunt.^
  • 41:46 in.^
  • 44:44 in.
  • 48:31 in.^

Also starring everybody's favorite "Hawaii Five-O" actor, Khigh Dhiegh (Wo Fat).

A terrific score with a good variety. I'm impressed with Albertine.

10:46 in: A brief view of a map of part of Fantasy Island. The place is huge. It's like a small country, based on that map and the fact established in a prior episode that you have to take a small plane to the far side of the island.

    "Birthday Party / Ghostbreaker"
    By: Lance Rubin
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4k2sek

    Highlights:

  • 32:50 in.^
  • 36:04 in.^
  • 37:17 in.^
  • 40:11 in.^
  • 42:29 in.^
  • 44:14 in. Music for fencing.^ *

I'm not sure how much of this I would include on a set of season two scoring. The orchestration, while colorful, is rather thing in comparison to all the composers beforehand

That's not how projectors work in real life. Maybe in "Scooby Doo".

    * = That fencing fight was rather embarrassing. Just poorly done and no tension whatsoever. You know, I was watching videos learning how to sword fight and I stumbled upon a video an a Hollywood instructor who teaches fencing and -- as a bit of trivia I thought you guys might enjoy -- he said the fencing fight in the film "Rob Roy" is widely considered one of the most realistic fencing scenes in any film. So, here is the scene for those who haven't seen it or simply have forgotten it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERmM5l2ceoY

    Now THAT'S a fencing battle.

    (NtM: 31:40, 35:20, 38:01)

  • 44:24 in. And the cue after the commercial break, which is essentially the cue continuing, so I'd connect them on a set of season two scoring.^

Not only does Fantasy Island have an airport, but it has an emergency landing strip on the south end of the island.

48:16 in: MV listening to another overly-expensive-to-produce LP. Silently regretting.

    (NtM: 24:52, 25:56, 42:43)

Delightful score. I think I cited almost every single cue. Terrible episode.
The end credits lists the theme music being by both Rosenthal and Leonetti.

Mr. Roarke does not give out hand-outs to vagrants. But he does take fifty-one dollars from kids.

Trivia: the kitchen is right down the corridor from Mr. Roarke's office (referenced, no seen).

    SEASON 3:

    "Hit Man / The Swimmer"
    By: Tommy Leonetti
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x51mp33

This is presumably the final effort by Leonetti for the series.

  • About 38:20 in.^
  • 42:16 in. Including a riff on the Disney song (Did they get the rights? Too close to be a parody) "It's a Small World".^

The regular Rosenthal theme is back. And one of his cues is tracked in (not counting source music).

So, Mr. Roarke is not only the law enforcement, the legal system, and now the Mayor of Fantasy Island -- which he owns -- where in the world does he find the time to do all of this with an island so full of people? Just running the estate and helping fantasies, seems to be a near full-time job. ("Island Lord Mayor" as he calls the position)
I demand realism in my fantasy television! ;-)

    * = You're a paid assassin. Shoot him in the back while he's slowly swimming away. It's not like it's an ethical thing -- you get money for killing people. Shoot him in the back.

27:02 in: Still better looking than nuBruce Jenner.

Tattoo voting for himself and loosing reminds me of an episode of the late comedian Norm MacDonald's short-lived comedy series "A Minute With Stand Hooper", where Norm runs for Mayor or some such local position. 17:55 in:

I know I've said it multiple times before in other threads, but Ken Harrison is a very talented composer. He's missed in the scoring world.

On a set of season three scoring, I might take select cues and edit them uo to make a Tattoo/baby suite and a marathon race music suite.

So, Mr. Roarke has powers as established in prior episodes, but here has to drug people's drink (thank goodness it wasn't Bill Cosby) to get the fantasies going.

Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more, the bloody Red Barron was ... yeah, like you didn't think of that song and see Snoopy either, right? Don't even think of lying, mister.

Aw, come on -- can't we have a "Dynasty"-style wedding? You know, where men raid it, open fire on everyone, and there's death and destruction? No? Well, what about my fantasy!

This time Mr. Roarke has the curtesy to tell the person he is going to give them a "potion".

So, Aphrodite and mermaids are real in Fantasy Island.

Mr. Roarke can take force lightning and turn people into stone. Or at least he can turn fake being into stone. It's not fully clear. But he can do it by looking at them. And he can affect minds just by looking at a person. But he still has to drug them. The universe building on this show leaves a little to be desired.

Lord, "Jurassic Park" this not. We forget how spoiled we are with dinosaurs after that film came out, and what they used to be in film and television.

It's a shame Ken Harrison -- a composer on "Dynasty" -- didn't get to score this episode.

Now Mr. Roarke uses magical doors and potions.

And I am remembering that earlier in the series the fantasies involved other people who had fantasies, Tattoo flying planes and getting shot down, and even the cook shipped in on one. Now the fantasies seems to involve people that are real to the fantasies.

Ugh, the fucking mermaid is back. Well, at least Harrison is re-prising his material from her first appearance, so there's that.

Now Mr. Roarke is just offering them the potions instead of drugging (or potioning) them.

Mr. Roarke makes the offer to withdraw a guy from his fantasy. I can't tell if he was doing that to push the guy into doing the right thing or not, but I do recall a few episodes ago he said that was impossible and that a fantasy takes on a life of its own.

Man, if it wasn't for the blonde in the dress with the amazing ... this episode would have been very difficult to get through.

    * = Ah, no. That's way way way more than enough time to turn, aim and fire. A truly skilled marksman could have re-loaded a few times and pumped the corpulent hero full of lead. Man, it really is "Fantasy" Island.

    Now Fantasy Island has police.

Mr. Roarke: "You see, even a fantasy must have a touch of realty."

What a pleasant score. I'm almost tempted to says Harrison should have gotten at least an Emmy nomination for this.

Mr. Roarke can control animals with his mind ... threw television broadcasts. Yeah, that's Rod Serling suspension of disbelief I can't go with. In order to reach that horse and continually follows it to get that result when you can't actually know precisely where it is when you are not even at the track, his powers would have to to taken in by the TV screen, travel reversely threw the broadcast in the air,, beamed reversely back from the broadcast towers, into the camera that is filming the event live, the shoot out the camera into the horse. I mean, dear fluffy lord. No.

Mr. Roarke can material out of thin air, control minds, create realities, can give mermaids legs, he can make women young again permanently, but ... he can't make a deaf girl hear permanently, even though he did so temporarily. Maybe if she had had two kids that would give him fifty-one dollars...

Mr. Roarke: "Look into infinity, and beleive in the impossible."
