I`m always impressed by the wonderful melodic americana scores of that show by David Rose. Just watched an episode that dealed with the treatment of native americans during the 19th century in a very sensitive way and the score was very touching.
Fantastic television music that would make a great 3 - 4 cd set.

The version of the theme ("The Big Bonanza") that Rose did for the twelfth and thirteenth seasons(IIRC) of Bonanza sounds like a rehearsal for LHoTP.

Both BONANZA and LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE are among the few American western series (plus GUNSMOKE) that have been shown and that are relatively known in Norway. I remember LHOTP very well from my own childhood (mid 80's), as reruns were shown over here. So Rose definitely has a presence here, even though no one has probably has heard his name.

"The Stripper" is his best-known piece (no pun intended), even if most don't even know, as you point out, who Rose is.

David Rose holds the distinction of owning the publishing rights to all of his film and television music (including the episode scores for "Bonanza" and "Little House On The Prairie").

I loved Little House on the Prairie when I was a kid. Watched it all the time. I'd buy a soundtrack release in a heartbeat.

I wish they'd "giddyup" on those Bonanza DVDs...only twelve more seasons to go! frown

Michael Landon was a loyal guy--to his colleagues, anyway--and often employed the same actors and of course kept David Rose on when Landon became a power behind Bonanza. He retained Rose through Bonanza and LHoTP and Highway to Heaven. It's not a collaboration that will be gushed over on these boards, except by me. big grin

To the OP: You gotta fight to keep these David Rose topics alive. Otherwise, they'll just Goldsmith you to death. Fight! Fight!! Fight!!! wink

If you want to hear an exceptional Bonanza score by David Rose (out of the many he composed), then check out the segment "Forever," the two-hour fourteenth (last) season premiere in which Little Joe's pregnant newlywed wife is killed by the associates of a professional gambler who then proceed to cover up the killing by setting the house the couple share on fire. A tough watch at times, but a powerful episode of the series, one with a motion picture-caliber score by David Rose.

Yes! "Forever" is Bonanza's version of "The Searchers", in terms of emotional intensity. The emotions were high on set because the story was intended for Dan Blocker, but he died before the season began--he died one day after actor Steve Ihnat, a close friend of Landon's and Blocker's--the tears shed by Lorne Greene and Landon in the one scene in the burned-out house were as much for Blocker as they were for their characters' mourning Joe's wife (Bonnie Bedlia).

BTW, the gambler, who was the wife's brother, was played by Andrew "Dirty Harry" Robinson.

I know the series is not everyone's cup of tea, but as a kid I watched it every day after school. As I grew older, it became a subject of many laughs and jokes (make a drinking game out of it: take a shot every time someone cries...you won't make it through a single episode!)

All the fun aside, I've always loved the sweeping score for this series, written by David Rose. It amazes me that this library of Americana has not yet been tapped. Is there a demand for this music to be released? Surely I'm not the only one out here who would like to see it happen. I simple 4 disc set of music from the series would work, especially if it included pieces from the final 2-hour film where they blew up the town.

So, does anyone know: would a release of Little House be a possibility??

I recently watched the final movie of this series and was reminded of how beautiful the music for this series truly was. The music of Little House deserves some sort of release.

Sidenote: they recently upgraded the show for HD and it looks beautiful. However, it also comes with a price: occasionally you can see poles with antennae or satellite dishes in the background! smile

I too add my endorsement for the high calibre music Rose provided for these series. Incidentally one of the first records I ever bought, some 60+ years ago, was Parade of the Clowns, on a 78 rpm on the MGM label. A TV station used it to introduce kiddie cartoon shows, and Rose's music impressed me even then...

I know David Rose's daughter who controls his catalog. She might be interested in working something out with this music if the soundtrack recordings are available. In the mean time Henry Mancini recorded a very nice arrangement of the theme on his "The Theme Scene" album (1978).

If you know his daughter, please reach out to her and let her know that some of us would love to see his Little House music released! It would be a great way for her father's work to have new life breathed into it.

I would be happy to contact her. However, if I could tell her a specific label is interested it would help.

I wonder if an outfit like La La Land would do it. Surely there's money to be made...

A collection of Rose's scores for Little House has always been a dream of mine. His music is pure beauty. The thought of getting a discussion going between the estate and one of the labels is absolutely exhilarating!

I too have always enjoyed David Rose's music for LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE. A CD (or more) of this beautiful music would be an instant buy for me. On YouTube there is some music from the series although not very much. Beautiful opening melody.
