1 GRAMMY, 2 NOMINATIONS
BEST PICTURE NOMINEES: Moulin Rouge, Ray
TOP GROSSING FILMS:
1. The Great Gatsby--144  (U.S. gross in millions)
2. The Incredible Hulk--134
3. Ray--75
4. World Trade Center--70

7. Moulin Rouge--57
8. Me Before You--56
9. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps--52
10. William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet--46

Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 3D remake of The Great Gatsby proved to be the composer’s highest-grossing film, as well as moving his work into an appealingly melodic direction, a trend he has continued with such scores as Far from the Madding Crowd, Victor Frankenstein, and Me Before You.  He has been unusually prolific in mainstream cinema recently, with other recent projects including Bridget Jones’s Baby and a shared scoring credit (with Adam Peters) on Oliver Stone’s Snowden. This June he was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

DAVID ARNOLD

8. Tomorrow Never Dies--125
9. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader--104
10. Four Brothers--74

He’s worked more in television than in features of late, his music for the popular Sherlock earning him and co-composer Michael Price an Emmy and two additional nominations; the team also scored a recent series Jekyll & Hyde. His most recent feature was the TV comedy spinoff The Inbetweeners 2.

CHRIS BACON

2 EMMY NOMINATIONS
TOP GROSSING FILMS:
1. Gnomeo and Juliet--99

3. Snatched--45 (as of 7/30/17)
4. Space Chimps--30
5. Alpha and Omega--25
6. Atlas Shrugged Part 2--3

Bacon shared the scoring credit with Theodore Shapiro on the recent Snatched, but otherwise hasn’t been very active in features lately, though with last year’s Being Charlie he became the first composer in nearly 30 years besides Marc Shaiman to score a Rob Reiner film. For television he was the principal composer for Bates Motel and Smash (which featured original Shaiman songs), and scored the gay activism miniseries When We Rise and episodes of A Series of Unfortunate Events. He has two animated features upcoming -- Sherlock Gnomes (a sequel to Gnomeo & Juliet) and Robodog.

Badelt continues to focus much more on European cinema than on American films. The Werner Herzog biographical epic Queen of the Desert, starring Nicole Kidman, James Franco, and Robert Pattinson as Lawrence of Arabia, received a limited release earlier this year, while Shanghai, filmed in 2008, finally had a limited U.S. release in 2015. Upcoming is the animated Leap!, previously titled Ballerina.

Barr has had only a few feature credits lately, including the ghastly all-star comedy The Big Wedding and the instant camp favorite The Boy Next Door, sharing the scoring credit on the latter with Randy Edelman, but he’s been working nonstop in television, following True Blood with Hemlock Grove and the critically acclaimed The Americans, both of which earned him Emmy nominations for his main title themes.

4 EMMYS, 17 NOMINATIONS
TOP GROSSING FILMS:
1. Appaloosa--20
2. Pollock--8
3. The Queen of Versailles--2
4. Blackfish--2
5. Weiner--1

While Beal’s recent feature output has been sparse, mostly documentaries such as the acclaimed Blackfish and Weiner, he continues to be one of the top composers in television, winning his fourth Emmy for his House of Cards music. He just received yet another nomination for his House of Cards scoring, and his most recent documentary projects include Boston, Oliver Stone’s The Putin Interviews, and the just-released An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power. The psychological drama Gypsy, starring Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup, is now streaming on Netflix.

8. Black or White--21

10. Summer of Sam--19

Blanchard resumed his working relationship with Spike Lee for 2015’s Chi-Raq, the director’s most satisfying film in several years. He also scored Black or White for writer-director Mike Binder and The Comedian for Taylor Hackford, but as always, his main creative focus is on jazz, which his 2015 album Breathless and a live album released in 2016.

TOP GROSSING FILMS:

2. The Break-Up--118

7. The Gambler--33
8. Magnolia--22
9. Punch-Drunk Love--17
10. I Heart Huckabees--12

Brion had one of his biggest hits in 2015 with the Amy Schumer vehicle Trainwreck, but as with most Judd Apatow-directed features, the score composer wasn’t given much room to contribute. His most recent film, 2017’s Wilson, starred Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern, and was scripted by Ghost World’s Daniel Clowes from his own graphic novel.

BEST PICTURE NOMINEES: The Fighter, Brooklyn
TOP GROSSING FILMS:
1. The Vow--125
2. The Fighter--93
3. Brooklyn--38
4. An Inconvenient Truth--23
5. Country Strong--20
6. Into the Wild--18
7. The Perks of Being a Wallflower--17
8. Affliction--6
9. Cesar Chavez--5
10. Who Killed the Electric Car--1

For a composer who specializes in small-ish, indie projects, Brook has the rare achievement of having scored two Best Picture nominees (as well as two Documentary Feature winners, An Inconvenient Truth and Undefeated). His warm score for 2015’s Oscar contender Brooklyn should garner him much deserved new attention, and the comedy-drama Tallulah played in theaters in 2016 as well as on Netflix. The Brook-scored teen transgender drama About Ray was panned at film festivals in 2015 and finally showed up in U.S. theaters this year with a new title, 3 Generations, and a new score by West Dylan Thordson (though European prints and video releases apparently feature the Brook score). He scores David Gordon Green’s upcoming docudrama Stronger, with Jake Gyllenhaal as an injured survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing.

1 OSCAR NOMINATION
10 EMMYS, 17 NOMINATIONS
TOP GROSSING FILMS:
1. Lost in Space--69

6. Silverado--32
7. Harry and the Hendersons--29
8. The Rescuers Down Under--27
9. The Presidio--20
10. Betsy's Wedding--19

Broughton’s last feature to receive a major theatrical release was One Tough Cop in 1998. His most recent Emmy nomination was for Texas Rising’s main title theme, sharing the credit with John Debney. His outstanding career gained an unfortunate footnote when, after receiving an unexpected Oscar nomination for the title song to the 2013 Christian drama Alone Yet Not Alone (the film itself was scored by William Ross), the Academy determined that Broughton, a former Academy governor, made unfair use of his position within the Academy to influence the voting, and the nomination was rescinded. His latest project is Seth Macfarlane’s Star Trek parody series The Orville.

TOP GROSSING FILMS:
1. The Fast and the Furious--144
2. Monster--34
3. Driven--32
4. Stealth--31
5. Go--16
6. Catch and Release--15
7. Underclassman--5

BT had his first feature scoring credit in several years with 2015’s Dark Places, a Gillian Flynn adaptation starring Charlize Theron that only received a limited release, as did the Anthony Hopkins serial killer thriller Solace. He was also the principal composer for the short-lived ‘80s-set cop series Wicked City.

1 OSCAR, 2 NOMINATIONS
5 GRAMMYS, 7 NOMINATIONS
TOP GROSSING FILMS:
1. Walk the Line--119
2. Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood--69
3. Crazy Heart--39

Having won the Original Song Oscar for Crazy Heart’s “The Weary Kind,” Burnett has been more prolific in television than features lately, as the principal composer for both seasons of True Detective, as well as the first season of Nashville (created by his wife, Thelma & Louise screenwriter Callie Khouri). His only feature scoring credit of late was the 2012 documentary A Place at the Table, though he also had key music duties on the Coen brothers’ score-less Inside Llewyn Davis. According to IMDB, he is both producer and composer for the upcoming feature The Peanut Butter Falcon.

TOP GROSSING FILMS:
1. The Visit--65
2. The Other Boleyn Girl--26
3. W.--25
4. Conviction--6
5. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly--5

In 2015 Cantelon had his biggest box-office hit with M. Night Shyamalan’s unexpectedly good found-footage horror film The Visit, but one might want to put an asterisk by that credit since his contribution consists of just one cue heard near the end of the film (which is presumably why James Newton Howard didn’t score the film). Other recent projects include the period drama Effie Gray, which starred Dakota Fanning as the unhappy wife of critic John Ruskin (with a screenplay by co-star Emma Thompson), and this year saw the release of Letters from Baghdad, a documentary about Getrude Bell (the subject of Werner Herzog’s Queen of the Desert).

TEDDY CASTELLUCCI

10. Little Man--58

1. Lawless--37
2. Hell or High Water --26
3. The Road--7
4. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford--3
5. The Proposition--1

Cave doubled as screenwriter and composer (partnered with Ellis) for 2012’s Lawless, which featured, as every film must these days, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain and Jason Clarke. Other recent credits include Far from Men, the documentaries West of Memphis and Prophet’s Prey, and last year’s multi-Oscar nominee Hell or High Water. This year the team has Netflix’s War Machine and the just-released Wind River, while Ellis was the solo composer on 2015’s  Foreign Language Oscar nominee, Mustang. (Cave also suffered a recent personal tragedy, losing his 15-year-old-son in an accident in 2015).

TOP GROSSING FILMS:
1. The Best Man Holiday--70
2. Boyz N the Hood--57
3.  Romeo Must Die--55

7. Undercover Brother--38
8. Higher Learning--38
9. First Sunday--37
10. The Best Man--34

Clarke had been absent from film scoring for several years but returned to score two hit sequels for director Malcolm D. Lee, The Best Man Holiday and Barbershop: The Next Cut.

8. Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery--53
9. Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay--38
10. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation--35

Clinton’s most recent scoring credit was the 2013 thriller Harvest, starring Oscar nominees Samantha Morton, Michael Shannon and Peter Fonda, and directed by John McNaughton, whom Clinton had worked with on the cult classic Wild Things.

CHARLIE CLOUSER

TOP GROSSING FILMS:
1. Saw II--87

6. Resident Evil: Extinction--50
7. Saw 3D--45
8. The Stepfather--28
9. Saw VI--27
10. Dead Silence--16

With the Saw franchise at least temporarily finished, and Saw auteur James Wan working with other composers (especially Joseph Bishara), Clouser has been more active in small screen projects, particularly Wayward Pines and the adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s science-fiction classic Childhood’s End. He also co-wrote the theme music (with Cesar Davila-Irizarry) for the long-running American Horror Story. (And now it looks like Clouser may be scoring the return to the Saw franchise, this fall’s Jigsaw.)

4. Wrong Turn--15
5. They--12

8. Apartment Zero--1

His most prominent recent features were the trashy sequel Piranha 3DD, the final part of the Atlas Shrugged adaptation (he’d scored the first part as well, but Chris Bacon scored part 2), and the earnest Sean Bean drama Any Day. His latest film, Armed Response starring Anne Heche and Wesley Snipes, has just been released.

Jeff Danna has been balancing projects composed with his Oscar-winning brother Mychael -- such as the Emmy-nominated music for TV’s Tyrant and the charming Pixar film The Good Dinosaur -- with ambitious solo scores like his adaptation of Kurt Cobain music for the stunning documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck. The brothers teamed up for two major releases last fall -- the moderately successful animated comedy Storks, and Ang Lee’s stylistically adventurous but little-seen Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. Their next score together is the animated feature The Breadwinner.

While Eshkeri still has yet to score a big box-office hit (and even his highest-grossing film, Kick-Ass, was a shared credit among four composers plus a cue by Elfman), he is developing one of the most eclectic resumes around, ranging from the somber strings of Ralph Fiennes’ The Invisible Woman to the high-energy antics and whimsical orchestrations of Shaun the Sheep Movie, not to mention the Julianne Moore Oscar winner Still Alice and the undersea heist thriller Black Sea. His most recent feature released in the U.S. was the WWII romantic suspense drama The Exception.

Paradoxically enough, Glass’s highest grossing film so far was at the same time a notorious box-office flop -- 2015’s reboot of Fantastic Four, with Glass sharing the scoring credit with Marco Beltrami. He reunited with Koyaanisqatsi director Godfrey Reggio for the 2013 documentary/art piece Visitors, and his recent concert pieces include Two Movements for Four Pianos and Double Concerto for Two Pianos. In 2015 he published his memoir, Words without Music.

His most recent stage collaboration with partner Julie Taymor, her 2013 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, was “captured” as a film in 2014 which received an extremely limited release. Still no recording of his opera Grendel, though recent concert pieces like Jabberwocky and Symphony in G Minor have been released on CD. If IMDB is to be believed, he will compose his first score for a non-Taymor film in eight years – Our Souls at Night, a reteaming of Redford and Fonda.

Arguably, wouldn't Philip Glass' highest-grossing film be "The Truman Show"? I suppose it might be a bit debatable since he was credited with "Additional Music" rather than as co-composer, but his music was pretty prominent in the film. Admittedly, I know some of Glass' contribution was taken from previously-existing pieces, though.
