He has been unusually prolific in mainstream cinema recently, with other recent projects including Bridget Jones’s Baby and a shared scoring credit (with Adam Peters) on Oliver Stone’s Snowden. This June he was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

While Beal’s recent feature output has been sparse, mostly documentaries such as the acclaimed Blackfish and Weiner, he continues to be one of the top composers in television, winning his fourth Emmy for his House of Cards music. He just received yet another nomination for his House of Cards scoring, and his most recent documentary projects include Boston, Oliver Stone’s The Putin Interviews, and the just-released An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power. The psychological drama Gypsy, starring Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup, is now streaming on Netflix.

Blanchard resumed his working relationship with Spike Lee for 2015’s Chi-Raq, the director’s most satisfying film in several years. He also scored Black or White for writer-director Mike Binder and The Comedian for Taylor Hackford, but as always, his main creative focus is on jazz, which his 2015 album Breathless and a live album released in 2016.

Brion had one of his biggest hits in 2015 with the Amy Schumer vehicle Trainwreck, but as with most Judd Apatow-directed features, the score composer wasn’t given much room to contribute. His most recent film, 2017’s Wilson, starred Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern, and was scripted by Ghost World’s Daniel Clowes from his own graphic novel.

For a composer who specializes in small-ish, indie projects, Brook has the rare achievement of having scored two Best Picture nominees (as well as two Documentary Feature winners, An Inconvenient Truth and Undefeated). His warm score for 2015’s Oscar contender Brooklyn should garner him much deserved new attention, and the comedy-drama Tallulah played in theaters in 2016 as well as on Netflix. The Brook-scored teen transgender drama About Ray was panned at film festivals in 2015 and finally showed up in U.S. theaters this year with a new title, 3 Generations, and a new score by West Dylan Thordson (though European prints and video releases apparently feature the Brook score). He scores David Gordon Green’s upcoming docudrama S tronger, with Jake Gyllenhaal as an injured survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing.

Broughton’s last feature to receive a major theatrical release was One Tough Cop in 1998. His most recent Emmy nomination was for Texas Rising’s main title theme, sharing the credit with John Debney. His outstanding career gained an unfortunate footnote when, after receiving an unexpected Oscar nomination for the title song to the 2013 Christian drama Alone Yet Not Alone (the film itself was scored by William Ross), the Academy determined that Broughton, a former Academy governor, made unfair use of his position within the Academy to influence the voting, and the nomination was rescinded. His latest project is Seth Macfarlane’s Star Trek parody series The Orville.

BT had his first feature scoring credit in several years with 2015’s Dark Places, a Gillian Flynn adaptation starring Charlize Theron that only received a limited release, as did the Anthony Hopkins serial killer thriller Solace. Having won the Original Song Oscar for Crazy Heart’s “The Weary Kind,” Burnett has been more prolific in television than features lately, as the principal composer for both seasons of True Detective, as well as the first season of Nashville (created by his wife, Thelma & Louise screenwriter Callie Khouri). His only feature scoring credit of late was the 2012 documentary A Place at the Table, though he also had key music duties on the Coen brothers’ score-less Inside Llewyn Davis. According to IMDB, he is both producer and composer for the upcoming feature The Peanut Butter Falcon.

In 2015 Cantelon had his biggest box-office hit with M. Night Shyamalan’s unexpectedly good found-footage horror film The Visit, but one might want to put an asterisk by that credit since his contribution consists of just one cue heard near the end of the film (which is presumably why James Newton Howard didn’t score the film). Other recent projects include the period drama Effie Gray, which starred Dakota Fanning as the unhappy wife of critic John Ruskin (with a screenplay by co-star Emma Thompson), and this year saw the release of Letters from Baghdad, a documentary about Getrude Bell (the subject of Werner Herzog’s Queen of the Desert).

Jeff Danna has been balancing projects composed with his Oscar-winning brother Mychael -- such as the Emmy-nominated music for TV’s Tyrant and the charming Pixar film The Good Dinosaur -- with ambitious solo scores like his adaptation of Kurt Cobain music for the stunning documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck. The brothers teamed up for two major releases last fall -- the moderately successful animated comedy Storks, and Ang Lee’s stylistically adventurous but little-seen Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. Their next score together is the animated feature The Breadwinner.

Paradoxically enough, Glass’s highest grossing film so far was at the same time a notorious box-office flop -- 2015’s reboot of Fantastic Four, with Glass sharing the scoring credit with Marco Beltrami. He reunited with Koyaanisqatsi director Godfrey Reggio for the 2013 documentary/art piece Visitors, and his recent concert pieces include Two Movements for Four Pianos and Double Concerto for Two Pianos. In 2015 he published his memoir, Words without Music.

Glennie-Smith’s ongoing partnership with director Randal Wallace yielded yet another hit, 2015’s Christian-themed Heaven Is For Real. He also continues to work as a conductor for other composer’s scores, including such recent films as Pacific Rim, Captain Phillips, Deadpool, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Transformers: The Last Knight.

His most recent stage collaboration with partner Julie Taymor, her 2013 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, was “captured” as a film in 2014 which received an extremely limited release. Still no recording of his opera Grendel, though recent concert pieces like Jabberwocky and Symphony in G Minor have been released on CD. If IMDB is to be believed, he will compose his first score for a non-Taymor film in eight years – Our Souls at Night, a reteaming of Redford and Fonda.
