Yeah, agree for the most part, although I think that C and PD is more melodic and tuneful. Neither is a particularly great work of composition, but at least the second is more full bodied orchestral score from what I can recall.

Clear And Present Danger has more pure orchestral moments, but a large portion of the non-Ryan scenes are synth-based.

PG is full of Horner self rip-offs, and it is a pretty lazy sleepy score. Clear and Present Danger is far superior.

The argument could be made that both Clear And Present Danger and Patriot Games, in their complete forms, are a dual exercise in tedium. So much dead weight in these scores, even on the original albums (like that 11 minute Synclaiver jerkoff session on Patriot Games). I still prefer the Patriot Games score overall. The synth-only cues on Clear And Present Danger just sounded like Thursday Night Prime to me.

CAPD is a fine action score, but PATRIOT GAMES has a certain haunted quality to it that's unique among action movies. It helps the movie, which is really a very simple revenge flick, somehow seem more weighty and important than it really is. Horner really earned his money with this one.

I think Patriot Games is a decent film, I did not mind the ending which the critics railed against either, the score I can take it or leave it. But I did buy it in my Horner phase, but I think I listened to that moody Clannad song as much as his score.

That is exactly what I was trying to say. Good call, Mike.

No one does angry revenge like Harrison Ford.
Even though he became Mr. Paycheck, he was good in these roles.

*Though I still liked Alec Baldwin, and Red October is such a good-entertaining film.

Love the film. The score is one of my favorite Horner scores, and one of my earliest. I played the hell out of my cassette tape until I got it on CD! There is a ton of awesome unreleased music and I'm thrilled to finally hear it. Can't wait! Horner using two of my favorite of his methods: the rhythmic panflute/shakuhachi and the echoing synth female voice (a la Jade, Red Heat, Braveheart). There is incredible beauty in this score, and "The Hit" rivals "The Ambush" for lengthy Jack Ryan setpiece action extravaganzas. Perfect timing to release this score, one of my grails!

As this and CAPD were originally Milan CDs I wonder if that means Dead Zone and Brazil can be re-done and present the complete scores? Hope so.

I don't think a week goes by here at the LLL offices when I don't utter the phrase, "I will fucking destroy you! I will make it my mission in life!" I don't sound as threatening as Jack Ryan, but my point gets across

Is that really necessary? The poor girl was only trying to get you a cup of coffee. Who knew you wanted decaf?

I certainly remember elements of this score, and have memories of the movie, but not in great detail.

With this and Clear and Present Danger now out complete, I wonder how long before someone releases "The Hunt for Red October" and "The Sum of All Fears"?

LLLR already have one of these on the docket?

OH YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now bring me Hunt for Red October and I'll be a happy boy!!!

I am not sure how much is missing from Red October, the CD I have seems pretty adequate.
What is not there?

There's about 25-30 minutes of more unreleased music to Red October . Film version tracks, unreleased, and maybe some deleted tracks.

Graveyard Dock # 4/Two Keys
A New Russian Sub
Course Two-Five-Zero (slight extended film version) Ryan’s Theory (National meeting)
Tupolev’s Orders (The Hunt Begins)
Jonesy’s Theory
Red Route 1 (film version longer and sounds better)
Ryan Departs to the Dallas
New Orders
Battle Stations
Crazy Ivan
Plotting a New Course
Americans Meet the Russians
Konovalov’s Attack
Combat Tactics
The Saboteur/Dallas Intervention/Ka-Boom!! (film version, synth mix much longer in film)

Thanks Shockwave, i did not realize that much is missing. I love both this film and this score, and apparently so did Hans Zimmer when he scored Crimson Tide.

Over 50 minutes of unreleased music? If my rusty memory is right I dont think more then 20 minutes were what I tried to figure out on last viewing? Am I wrong? Really looking forward to that cue when Ryan walks into the CIA building. Love that 48hrs style.

Yeah, that's the cue I was talking about earlier. It's like, 90 seconds, right? That's worth getting a 2CD set for, right? Haha

There is no mention made of remastering either, which IMHO is a good thing. The original album had a gorgeously wet sound with just the right amount of reverb to capture the very specific tone Horner was going for.

My pleasure Ado. Red October is one of my holy grails. I do hope Intrada (if it might be them) will pull this off w/all the extra goodies including the film version cues. Sorry to get off topic. Looking forward to Patriot Games too.

I'm also VERY happy that the existence of bootlegs of titles like PG don't prevent labels from tackling them. I'll easily replace my unofficial copies with official immediately.

I'm surprised the two Horners came out complete first, since Horner is still alive and we all know prefers not to release complete versions of his scores (ie. Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Natty Gann, Something Wicked This Way Comes were all not complete because Intrada worked with him on them). On the other hand, Poledouris and Goldsmith (the latter infamously against complete score releases for the most part) are sadly no longer with us so I would've expected it to be less tricky to get their respective scores out in complete versions. And they'd also be considered a higher priority by me in terms of their complete scores.
