disc 1. track 24: hot pursuit...from second 52 -55

On the sessions, this track plays continuously, on beat, with no dropout. That's disc 2, track 30. In the film, there is a music edit (most audible in the bass) at 50:00;21, where a brief, dramatic swell overlay was seemingly added in post at ~50:02;23. The sound of Hot Pursuit is audible up to 50:06;00, dropping during the overlay, then there is a pause until 50:11;11, when the Hot Pursuit music comes back with an acute fade up into a bass note. It's a pause for effect created in the edit.

Since the music editor probably didn't say, "Bobby, run this music snippet down to the archives and tell 'em to store it with the Looney Tunes score," it probably wasn't available for this presentation. The more I look at this track, the more it seems like it may have been the best available way to for the film score presentation to handle a weird situation created in post.

It should've been in the bonus section. I'll never understand why some album producers want to include the film mix of a cue in the main body of the score when it was created editorially.

Sometimes that is all we have or else there wouldn't be a deluxe edition of many releases. Studios don't always have it all, the producers, engineers and composers tend to have the music we use for many of these releases. In the end, we dig for sources, get what we will get and plan around that in terms of needing to mix, master and/or even edit the final music you hear on a release.

Never gave this score a fair shake when it came out originally so I am happy to revisit it. I really appreciate the care that went into this release and I think it sounds great. I really like the alternate take of Car Trouble, which I think is the highlight of the score. Also the Debney story in the liner notes about Goldsmith cracking a James Horner joke made my day!

I never heard this score before this deluxe version and I have to say, I can't stop listening to it. It's pure Goldsmith fun and I absolutely love this release. I'm glad they included everything they did along with the original album. Zero complaints from me. Such a fun listen.

Great release. Some audio oddities throughout - some cues don’t sound right. Also the big one - Area 52, what happened to that theramin style sound (was it a human voice) It sounds like demo synth for want of a better description.. Did it sound that way in the movie? Not a problem as the album version is on disc 2, but it really stood out.

URGH. I hope this doesn't turn out to be another Air Force One.... Mine shipped today.

That is because we have found better masters with each release we work on. The AFO was a strange situation where the assets were what they were.

Thanks for the info Byron. So this means that the better masters inevitably will sound different than the previous ones on the original soundtrack albums? Or is it mainly a difference in mixes?

Sometimes. Many times we will be working with the film mix vs. whatever was used on a previous release. In the case of AFO we used many sources to piece together the soundtrack that some liked, others didn't. In this case, Yavar, Peter and others can attest as we worked real hard to ensure all music came from the same sources. Bruce had a lot of this material. I think this turned out nice. We tried to make sure to include as much interesting source cues along with film mix, original CD mix and alternates. This one is among the proudest releases I've worked on to date.

Sure sounds like a lot of work went into this release and as a Goldsmith fan, I say thank you!

I for one was glad you all did a complete "Air Force One" and continue to enjoy to this day. Bring on more Goldsmith!

This just arrived in the post with 'Along Came a Spider' and I'm looking forward to digging into it. It seems like a number of Goldsmith cues have been replaced by the Cameron Patrick rewrites on disc 1. I'm keen to put together a playlist of the complete score with as much Goldsmith as possible but I'm going a bit crosseyed trying to figure it all out from the back cover...

This is what i've come up with:

-'What's Up?', replace disc 1 track 2 with disc 2 track 1
-Replace disc 1 track 6 with disc 2 tracks 4-7
-Replace disc 1 track 18 with disc 2 tracks 10-12
-"The Launch", replace disc 1 track 19 with disc 2 track 13

Any help most appreciated!

I've tried the above out and it doesn't work as all of the alternates feature slate numbers and stage chatter. I'm really not a fan of presenting alternates this way as it robs you of the ability to listen to them on purely musical terms. I do like this kind of thing when presented separately (as in the recent 'Along Came a Spider') or when used for context (the take numbers on the 1997 RCA Victor 'Star Wars' main title archive) but I much prefer alternate music to be presented clean.

What’s Up and Area 52 you can and should just swap in from the original album program on Disc 2, IMO. Technically, it is a different mix, but personally I don’t really notice that.

Just got around to listening to this all the way through.
I was in for a big disappointment when I heard all the slate and noise chatter at the start of each alternate cue.
I hope this isn't a trend..it sounds awful to me and in my opinion ruins the presentation.
Someone may have thought it was a cool decision, but it just sounds like it's a sloppy pirated tape stolen from the sessions.

I like having the chatter as behind the scenes bonus material, but I strongly prefer it to be collected at the end in a single track, like the latest Along Came a Spider expansion (also produced by Botnick) has.

Thanks, Yavar, for the additional perspective. And yes, it's an extra added bonus, so I guess it's all icing on the cake anyway.
I was curious as to what others thought about it, so thanks again for the reply!

For me, nothing is more hilarious than the voicemail from Jerry to Kenny Hall that is on the RUNAWAY expanded edition... or is that ALIEN NATION album from Varese? Either way, that hilarious message of a bored Jerry calling Ken Hall just to bitch makes me laugh every single time.

Alien Nation. It cracks me up too. I've heard Jerry in commentaries and documentaries, but hearing him leave a friend a voicemail is priceless. I don't know how it came to be included, but it's most appreciated.

As long at it is at the very end of the last track then it is fine by me otherwise they can ruin a good listen. So I can understand why someone is disappointed by this release because it is not as it was on Alien Nation.
