These Tyler Scream scores are weak sauce compared to the Beltrami ones.
They remind me of Mark Isham's score for Bill and Ted Face the Music; not bad scoring, but not good, either. It's just there...and not as distinctive as the work of the establishing composer. The pun I'm about to make was unavoidable, but musically speaking, the franchise (given that there's going to be a Scream 7) could use some fresh blood. John Frizzell or Benjamin Wallfisch could really do something special.
I know the directors had previously worked with Brian Tyler on Ready or Not, but did they just stay on the beaten path with his assignment or was Beltrami considered/asked? After enduring both of these miserably boring Scream movies I really understood that much of the "voice" of Scream was Beltrami's music. Or course Kevin Williamson's dialogue and twisting intrigue is the primary component, and Wes Craven's unassuming formalism also, but his music is such a strong ally. It was greatly missed with these new ones.
Is this the first time Varese Sarabande has put out a "new" score album...since the last Brian Tyler Scream? I think it might be, but maybe I've missed some TV releases of theirs or something.

Well, c'est la vie. I think even if John Williams was my best friend and was scoring all of my dream movies that I would still go to Beltrami first with this one out of the respect I have in what he created with those original four movies.

It's a sign of the times when Varese releases a new score on CD and it warrants a dedicated press release! They used to release a new score on CD every hour, pretty much...
I haven't purchased them on album, but in the films I thought the Tyler scores were good, with some strong standout moments. Probably the latest one (which I guess he co-wrote?) being the better of the two.
Still wish they'd kept Beltrami on the series though, because neither Tyler effort comes near his excellent work for the same directors on Ready or Not.

Yeah, it's a big change from even 10 years ago when I feel like their CD Club was still a limited side thing to supplement their standard wide releases. They put out the scores for a bunch of big movies including the original How to Train Your Dragon, as well as a bunch of high profile TV shows like House of Cards (a separate soundtrack album for each season, just as they had done before with LOST) and the first two seasons of Game of Thrones.
Now I feel like a "standard" Varese release has become a total rarity, and the majority of their income must come from Club releases which are almost always expanding titles they hold perpetuity rights on from the 1990s (or very occasionally 2000s-on or 1980s like Lionheart). They even started a Varese Sarabande Vinyl Club a few weeks ago.
"We're excited to announce our latest partnership with Paramount Pictures to release the 2 CD / 2 LP versions of SCREAM VI...". Maybe more new stuff will come from them?
The only thing I feel these new movies is missing is Beltrami! I do enjoy the scores (specially for Scream 5, the sisters theme and the Dewey/Gale theme is amazing!) but they are nothing like Beltrami's work...like, at all! lol! For Scream 5 I can hear he (Tyler) at least did an effort. But with the 6th one it doesnt even sound like he tried...all though it does have some nice moments and it has somewhat grown on me.
But I missed Beltrami more than I missed Sidney in SCREAM VI (the movie did really work fine without her and I loved it! Better than 3, 4 and 5, imo).
I was worried that this would be the first SCREAM movie without a CD release so..... CD ordered!
I think of Sidney as the "lead" of the Scream franchise, and it is really the only thing I would classify as "Final Girl Driven" in comparison to other Slashers which rely on their creepy killers as the moneymakers. Ghostface is an interchangeable obstacle in Sidney's existence. It's a unique and fantastic franchise. I missed her greatly in part 6 and while it is great to think that her character has a moment to "retire" we are dealing with cynical Hollywood so I've already got a wager down on seeing a Scream legacy sequel in about 15 years with Neve Campbell back as Sidney Prescott and some new hot director pitching the story as something that ignores 5 and 6 and beyond even occured. Remember me for posterity.
