Huh.

You know, to really hit the nostalgia button, here's hoping for at least a few quotes of the game music.

"Composer Brian Tyler heads to the scoring stage in just 11 days. He's been working hand in hand with Koji Kondo to integrate classic themes from the game into the film's score."

Do we have any word on if Tyler will be faithful to the amazing music this video game series has produced, or is it just gonna be rote Brian Tyler stuff? I fear the latter. I don't really think this movie has much of an interest in the things I enjoy about the Super Mario Bros. video game franchise so I'd probably be best avoiding it.

It uses themes from the games - you can hear them in this clip:

OK, yeah. It's what I feared. Sure there is some recognition of the music from Koji Kondo but through the rote styles and voice of Brian Tyler. The movie looks equally uninspired but Illumination is the most overrated animation studio in my opinion. It's one I'll have to pass on. I'll always have the video games!

New interview with Brian about the score

https://screenrant.com/super-mario-bros-movie-composer-interview/

This part really makes it sound like we're going to get a fun score:

Koji Kondo, the original writer of this music, who I adore and am friends with, was a big part of this. I would talk to him back and forth: "Okay, what about this? What do you think if I did this for this?" because I wanted to incorporate things. Sometimes it's invisible, [or] just like an Easter egg. The harp might be doing a line from the select screen on Mario Kart that only happens when you're in the waiting room. There's a part [in the movie] where Mario and Luigi are in a waiting room, and I thought it'd be cool [if] within the score that's actually a mystery score, you hear the harp playing the waiting room music. I wanted to completely dive in and make [the film's music] a feast for people that watch it 1,000 times, or Mario fans, but [ensure it] also works on a dramatic level.

This score is big. It's orchestral, it's got choir, and it's got bands, it's got Italian instruments, accordions, live drums, mandolins, and whistling human voices. Also, I'm using eight-bit [sounds]. I'll be playing the drums, and all of a sudden the tom fill is just eight-bit tom fills. It's really eclectic, but at the same time, the goal was that it would work on a level that a score like [John Williams' score for] E.T. [does]. It has a transcendent nature; it is not limited by the polyphony you have on an eight-bit thing. It's not just porting over melodies from a game to a movie. It had to be so much more to capture what this film is.

Disagree. I am not going to lie; I actually really like the animation style for this movie.

Since the score uses themes from Koji Kondo's original music, it will probably be really good.

I don't think I'll be watching the movie myself, but I think it'll be great for kids. They'll love it.

If it was coming to digital stores on April 4, it would d be up on Apple Music New Zealand already, since it is already April 4th there. But it is not:

Surely the digital edition of the album is dropping this Friday, April 7th.
