I finally saw the last episode of The X-Files. Was expecting more of a clipshow than it was but still not satisfying. Forgot how much fun this show was during its first two seasons, I really doubt anyone would dare to make something as audacious now. And despite the weird suits from the early 1990s, Gillian Anderson is damn good looking. Holy smokes.

I really like Snow's music in the series, especially in the beginning and the end of the show's run. Theres some great piano work in "Release" which is at the tail end of the last season, and I can think of a lot of other music throughout, here and there.

Is there anyway I can convince you at LLL to either put more CDs in the set - or make it the first of other multiple-disc volumes? wink

The first season was superb, but I lost interest during season Two.

Looking more forward to LaLa's hint on TALES FROM THE CRYPT scores...big grin

Trust me -- 4 discs is more than enough.

I have NEVER seen the X-Files so I downloaded the very first one and I liked it, so I guess I'll grab the season dvd sets and watch them. The music was good in that episode.

Is any of the material from The Truth And The Light going to be on your set, sans dialogue?

I'm currently struggling to get through season 9. I started half a year ago with re-watching the series in its entire run (including movies) and the end is finally in sight.

In retrospect so far I can say that seasons 1-5 were the best, with seasons 6 and 7 becoming terrible in the main storyline but still enjoyable in the standalone episodes. Seasons 8 and 9 (with the supersoldiers...) are so far removed from what the X-files is all about that it's painful to watch. I like Robert Patrick, but the other characters (Monica, Skinner) have become so dull and unimportant it's like watching furniture.

The music is great for the first half of the series, then it gets kinda all over the place and it ends up losing the magic near the last couple of seasons. That moaning theme Snow composed for Scully is so terrible and over the top, I cringe when I hear it!

So ideally, I would go for seasons 1-5 on discs 1,2,3 and the later stuff on disc 4. wink

The mythology stuff becomes dull and boring by season 4 or 5 for me, but some of the stand-alone episodes where they introduce the two new FBI agents were really good. There was an episode involving a huge vampire bat that was really creepy!

I think the La-La guys have enough on their plate, why don't we wait til the set is out, or at least til it's real close when they put online the discs and the contents. I imagine these guys have so much going on, then to go through and say what's on the disc and such, heck, they may still be figuring out what's going to be on the 4 discs!!!

The bat episode was good. Also the one with Scully when she's trapped in a town involving a sect and a worm. Creepy stuff indeed.

What I did notice score-wise, was that they used Moby's music in a couple of episodes (I think in season 8). It fit in nicely with the Mark Snow cues.

Did Mark Snow do the ENTIRE series? WOW, if he did, most impressive.

As far as I know he did them all (and Millennium as well I think). I once listened to an interview with him where he was glad to work on some foreign films that didn't involve action/suspense cues.

What I think makes him stand out from other tv composers is that he created a unique style of scoring for the x-files and instead of rehashing the themes and material he started out with, he kept on treating every episode with its own theme and sound. Especially around season 4-5, where he slightly abandons the dark conspiracy angle and goes a little bit more tongue-in-cheek.

He did X-Files for 9 years (including the outstanding orchestral score for the movie after season... 4? 5?), at the same time as doing the three years of Millennium and the year each of Harsh Realm and The Lone Gunmen lasted. I'm sure he did other stuff on the side as well.

Robert Patrick's character was a good addition to the cast, showed that he could be someone else other than the T-1000 guy, plus it was a nice reversal having Scully as the believer, something that she fought against for the majority of the seasons.

I think it was the intention of the writers to make the Skinner role more dull/boring and out of the way, they were trying to show that the x-files unit was well and truely on its own and beyond help at a higher level...plus they must have known that the series had run it's course and was not pulling the same audience figure's and buzz of its heyday...

Yes, they had a good chemistry going on. But the motivations for Scully for continuing the X-files, considering she was pregnant, didn't feel logical to me. It would have been more in line with the character to quit with Mulder gone and focus on her other career sooner. Of course they couldn't just have Dogget and Monica take over all at once, so the transition is very ackward to say the least. Also Scully hardly does anything more in season 9 than performing autopsies for their cases.

Regarding the mythology of the show, it is apparent that from the start they were just making it up as they went along. The more exposure of the secrets and plots, the weaker the house of cards got and for me it tumbled down a few times in the later seasons (especially in the season 6 finale).

Moving the show from Vancouver to L.A. also did little good IMO.

It was season 7 that featured two Moby tracks in different episodes "The Sky is Broken" was featured in the episode "All Things" and the other track "My Weakness" was featured in the episode "Closure". Both tracks can be found on Moby's album "Play".
