SEASON 1:

This was a TV series from 1987 that starred the late Pat Morita.

The theme is by Bill Conti.
If you don't like synth scoring in a 1980's vein, this will not be for you.

I am only covering season one because Conti and his orchestrator scored it. Season two went in a new direction in regards to the composer choice and theme music.

Wait -- the fucker jumped while I was typing the above. Mission: Accomplished!

    Continuing SEASON 1:

Attention readers: I am implementing a new system that is nothing more than a note to myself; for cues that I want to include in a suite, for now on I will denote them with ^ symbol. It has no special meaning to anyone else but myself. No, an up arrow symbol doesn't mean the cue is bad (it just may have too much SFX or FX for suite use or just isn't worth my time to edit and include). Hence forth this system will be in all future threads and pre-exiting threads that I go back to for missed episodes.

    "Laura"
    https://ok.ru/video/2362769017408

  • 6:42 in.
  • 9:56 in.^
  • 12:14 in.^
  • 19:30 in.
  • 24:12 in. And the bumper cue that immediately follows it. I'll have to hear the bumper cues again, but it seems there's never been a repeat; different ones each time.
  • 28:39 in.
  • 33:41 in.
  • 39:51 in. Cue is cut off, indicating to me that the scene was edited down from what was originally scored.^
  • 43:45 in.^(open? / 47:12)

This one includes some real orchestra.

    Guest-starring Nana Visitor.

  • 10:59 in.
  • 18:08 in.^
  • 22:48 in.^
  • 24:22 in. Plucky upbeat opening (albeit short) that sounds more like Mark Snow than Eskew.
  • 34:58 in.^
  • 35:22/36:24 in. The second cue is just about nine minutes long.^(both, parts)

Jack orchestrated for Conti on a number of films. When a short-lived TV series came out in 1988 called "Supercarrier", Conti must have been too busy to score the pilot, so he handed over scoring to Jack and only did the theme music (which was only used for the pilot; the series regular replaced Conti's theme). He had a short scoring career, going by his IMDb page (half those credits I added myself, so who knows what's missing).

Cop Trainee: "I thought we could handle it alone, sir."
Ohara: "Try picking up a dime with one finger."

I know I said I was only doing season one, but yesterday I was submitting composer credits to IMDb for season two, finishing it up, and a little over half way into the season I made a discovery: Joel Goldsmith took over. I didn't even know he scored the series. So, naturally I have to cover his efforts.

Ooooohhh yeah, I loved this theme. This was that point in my life when I tape recorded every TV theme I could. This is one I played over and over and over. It was up there with Blacke's Magic.
