Finishing SEASON 3:

"Deadly Innocence"
https://archive.org/embed/kojak-season-3/S3+E20+Deadly+Innocence.mkv

Highlights:
  • 0:52 in. This might be tracked from a prior episode [eight-note brass theme].^
  • 2:01 in.^
  • 5:16 in.^(6:00-sh
  • 14:23 in. Short outtro cue.^
  • 29:18 in.^
  • 32:30 in.^
  • 41:16 in.^
  • 45:50 in.^
  • 48:22 in.^

About 15:00 minutes in -- I've seen that hospital set in another TV series. Probably an episode of "Columbo".

    (NtM: 8:26)

    "Justice Deferred"
    https://archive.org/embed/kojak-season-3/S3+E21+Justice+Deferred.mkv

    Highlights:
  • 0:51 in.^ *
  • 3:25 in.^
  • 6:50 in.^
  • 22:41 in.^
  • 35:41 in.^
  • 38:39 in.^
  • 39:57 in.^
  • 43:30 in. Funky for most of the cue.^
  • 49:35 in. I think this is tracked from a prior episode.^

    * = Gotta speed over and screech to a halt, otherwise that old skeletal corpse might have enough time to come back to life and walk away, don't ya know.

"What the hell's the big mystery about pyramids?"
    "They don't have johns."

Captain: "Don't ask me -- I just come here for the coffee."

Kojak: "I told him to get some shut-eye, not knock off for the winter!"

Kojak: Bangs a pretzel on a cart, showing its rock hard, "I want a pretzel not a weapon."

    "Both Sides of the Law"
    https://archive.org/embed/kojak-season-3/S3+E22+Both+Sides+Of+The+Law.mkv

    SEASON 4:

    "Birthday Party"
    https://ok.ru/video/5329133112008

    Highlights:
  • 0:50 in.^
  • 7:15 in.^
  • 16:04 in.^
  • 18:26 in.^
  • 39:30 in. Almost ten minutes long -- goes to the end of the episode.^(43:00)

    Also guest starring Richard Gere.

For the guys here: 30:50 in. You're welcome.

    "A Summer Madness"
    https://archive.org/embed/kojak-season-4/S4+E2+A+Summer+Madness.mkv

    Highlights:
  • 0:51 in. Lower octave piano work with a solo trumpet, clearly aping Goldsmith's ideas from "Chinatown", while at the same time still sounding like sort of its own thing.^
  • 7:51 in.^
  • 10:46 in.^
  • 12:30 in.^
  • 13:20 in. More "Chinatown" aping, though I suspect using a direct comparison, this may just be part of the first cue tracked. This happens on this show.
  • 13:46 in.^
  • 19:44 in.^
  • 23:13 in.^
  • 24:55 in. More "Chinatown" aping.^
  • 33:24 in.^
  • 35:00 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^(both)
  • 40:12/42:28 in.^
  • 43:40 in.^

Special note to the acting of actress Fionnula Flanagan, playing the disturbed Molly.

    "Law Dance"
    https://archive.org/embed/kojak-season-4/S4+E3+Law+Dance.mkv

    Highlights:
  • 0:51 in. Opens with a bass flute, then is joined by funky material.^
  • 7:21 in.^
  • 13:15 in.^
  • 20:36 in.
  • 26:19 in.
  • 28:11 in. Shot outtro cue and the cue after the commercial break.^(both)
  • 29:21 in.^
  • 31:51 in.^
  • 38:58 in.^
  • 40:38 in.^
  • 43:54 in.^
  • 49:22 in. Lightly whimsical closing cue.^

This new season has a new update of the theme, adding, noticeably, harp runs to the opening and closing of the theme, but this episode drops it and uses the arrangement from the prior season.

    "Out of the Shadows"
    https://ok.ru/video/4826707200653

    Highlights:
  • 5:45 in.^
  • 6:31 in.^
  • 7:50 in.^
  • 9:27 in.^
  • 10:41 in.^
  • 14:59 in.^
  • 22:12 in.^
  • 24:00 in.^
  • 36:48 in. Almost sounds like something Billy Goldenberg would have done.^
  • 47:25 in.^

    "A Need to Know"
    https://archive.org/embed/kojak-season-4/S4+E5+A+Need+To+Know.mkv

    Highlights:
  • 0:52 in. Not so much the first two minutes.^
  • 16:04 in.^
  • 20:13 in.
  • 21:41 in.^
  • 26:51 in.^
  • 34:50 in.^
  • 37:41 in.^
  • 45:53 in.^

I'm almost tempted to say Cacavas should have gotten an Emmy nomination for this episode score.

    (NtM: 12:12)

    Continuing SEASON 4:

    "An Unfair Trade"
    https://archive.org/embed/kojak-season-4/S4+E6+An+Unfair+Trade.mkv

    Highlights:
  • 0:52 in.^
  • 41:21 in.
  • 45:45 in.^
  • 47:33 in.^

On a set of season four scoring, I'd probably only take away 41:21 and 47:33. The score -- on the whole -- is a moody low-key emotional effort that's serviceable to the episode, but ultimately boring for a CD release.

    "A Hair-Trigger Away"
    https://archive.org/embed/kojak-season-4/S4+E7+A+Hair-Trigger+Away.mkv

    Highlights:
  • 0:51 in. A steady funky drum kit rhythm with Cacavas trying to create a sax' echoplex-like effect naturally.^
  • 2:27 in.^
  • 8:39 in.^
  • 13:10 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^(second)
  • 15:01/18:53 in.^
  • 20:52/24:28/31:08/34:33 in.^
  • 25:57 in. And the funky source music which crossfades into the end of the cue.^
  • 28:52 in.^
  • 33:51 in.^
  • 37:22 in.^
  • 41:23 in.^
  • 47:46 in.^

    Out-of-context quote...
    Kojak: "Penetrate the salesman, baby."

    "By Silence Betrayed"
    https://archive.org/embed/kojak-season-4/S4+E8+By+Silence+Betrayed.mkv (4049

    Highlights:
  • 7:02 in.
  • 13:28 in.
  • 14:33 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^(Second)
  • 22:21 in.^
  • 36:40 in.^
  • 41:27 in.^

    https://ok.ru/video/4931389426317

    Highlights:
  • 0:52 in.^
  • 3:28 in.
  • 18:14 in.^
  • 29:39 in.^
  • 40:31 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^(second)
  • 49:15 in. This might be tracked from "A Hair-Trigger Away". And the cue after the commercial break.^
  • 1:03:26 in.^
  • 1:11:04/1:12:20 in.^
  • 1:15:29 in. This might be tracked from "A Hair-Trigger Away".^
  • 1:23:36 in.^
  • 1:26:20 in. Including a water chime.^
  • 1:35:54 in.^

    (NtM: 1:03:06)

    "The Pride and the Princess"
    https://archive.org/embed/kojak-season-4/S4+E10+The+Pride+And+The+Princess.mkv

    Highlights:
  • 2:25 in.^
  • 13:50 in.^
  • 16:13 in.
  • 21:50 in.^
  • 30:37 in.^
  • 35:11 in.
  • 48:11 in.^

    (NtM: 39:53)

    "Black Thorn"
    https://archive.org/embed/kojak-season-4/S4+E11+Black+Thorn.mkv

    Highlights:
  • 0:52 in. Including wordless female vocals.^
  • 2:02 in. Including wordless female vocals.^
  • 7:39 in. Including a water chime hit. And the cue after the commercial break.^(10:10)
  • 15:03 in.^
  • 17:40 in.^
  • 18:57 in. Including wordless female vocals.^
  • 21:36 in.
  • 23:45 in.^
  • 27:47 in.
  • 30:00 in. Including wordless female vocals.^
  • 31:20 in.^
  • 34:19 in.^(34:33)
  • 39:46 in. Joining a cue already in progress.^
  • 48:09 in. Including wordless female vocals.^

Roosevelt Grier returns for his second and final appearance on the show, returning as the character from the prior episode "Bad Dude", which also had a good score. That episode score is covered in suite #1 (still being edited). Without looking it up, I have a feeling they wanted to give him a spin-off series -- which should have happened -- but it never materialized. But had it, clearly Cacavas would have been the man for the job.

46:21 in: boom mic seen at the top.

    Highlights:
  • 0:52 in.^
  • 1:58 in.^

  • 24:48 in.^
  • 29:26 in. Relaxed melancholy cue.^
  • 34:06 in.
  • 35:31 in.^

  • 19:48 in.^
  • 22:59 in.^
  • 27:25 in.

  • 40:26 in.^
  • 42:57 in.^
  • 45:25 in. Also containing some light funky stuff. This might be an edited track job from a prior episode.^
  • 48:27 in. Closes like it was a piece of classical music.^

For the guys here: 6:29 in. You're welcome.

Kojak: "Its a lousy way to say 'I'm sorry', but it's the only way I got."

    "The Godson"

  • 7:37 in.^
  • 16:11 in.^
  • 17:40 in.^
  • 26:26 in.^
  • 32:32 in. I think the paced funky material is tracked from a prior episode.^
  • 37:36 in. And the cue after the commercial break, which I think is just tracked from "A Summer Madness".^
  • 41:03 in. This entire cue may just be an edit job of pieces from prior episodes.^
  • 44:19 in.^
  • 48:26 in.^

"When You Hear the Beep, Drop Dead"

    "Lady in the Squad Room"
    https://ok.ru/video/5186105576077

  • 0:52 in. Solo trumpet and double bass plucks lead the cue. I think this may be tracked from a prior episode.^
  • 6:29 in.^

  • 32:03 in.^
  • 36:35 in.^
  • 39:23 in.
  • 42:49 in.^
  • 45:42 in.^

Lord this show is so boring. How did it last five seasons??? Shows ten times better than this got one season!

Kojak: "You see, some of our leading degenerates are right here on the squad. Um hum. Including me."

    "Sister Maria"
    https://archive.org/embed/kojak-season-4/S4+E23+Sister+Maria.mkv

    Highlights:
  • 0:51 in. Flute and solo harp. Contains a bad edit in the cue, suggesting a part of it was cut out.^
  • 3:45 in.^
  • 6:03 in.^
  • 10:45 in.^
  • 13:14 in.^
  • 15:20 in. The pleasant and laid back solo piano source music cue for the fine-dining restaurant. Goes on for like three and-a-half minutes. And the score cue that follows it.^

  • 29:42 in.^
  • 41:40 in. Short outtro cue.^
  • 43:38 in.^
  • 47:45 in.^

    * = That guy reading out his line was so blandly done and so obviously dubbed over, it reminded me of that episode of "Batman" where a guy says to Batman, "Ringside table, Batman?".

    SEASON 5:

This season features an entirely new theme, with a kind of funky "Get Christie Love" vibe and a more romantic theme more akin to "Hart to Hart". No one is credited for the new theme, but given that Goldenberg is no longer credited, I assume Cacavas did the new theme.

"The Queen of Hearts is Wild"
    https://archive.org/embed/kojak-season-5/S5+E1+The+Queen+Of+Hearts+Is+Wild.mkv

    Highlights:

  • 34:49 in.^
  • 39:14/41:01 in.^
  • 41:57/44:22 in.^
  • 48:00 in.^

This was a particularly good score.

"Theo, I'll make a deal with you: either you kill yourself, or I'm gonna kill myself; there's no point in the two of us dying over this."

Kojak: To Stavros, "You stay here, Fatso, and have a diet drink."

    "Cry for the Kids"
    https://archive.org/embed/kojak-season-5/S5+E4+Cry+For+The+Kids.mkv

    Highlights:
  • 1:02 in. Almost a minute of 1970's feel-good music. I get the feeling this is inspired by a piece of score from some movie or TV show -- I feel I've heard something like this before.^
  • 2:34 in.^
  • 10:55 in.
  • 12:41 in.^
  • 17:46 in.^
  • 18:59 in. More of that feel-good music.^
  • 22:20 in. Also contains some feel-good music.^
  • 23:46 in.^

  • 29:11 in.^
  • 30:36 in.^
  • 33:34 in.^

    Another particularly fine score.

Kojak: "Next time I'm going to break your chops with my lollipops."

    Highlights:

"May the Horse Be with You"

    Highlights:
  • 1:02 in.^ *
  • 7:49 in.^
  • 24:49 in. And the cue after the commercial break, but in this instance the two cues sounds like they go together, so I would make the obvious choice of combining them. It's a logical and correct decision.^
  • 30:41 in.^
  • 32:47 in.^
  • 33:47 in.^
  • 38:21 in. At one point the cue goes into a short bit of southern-music type of sound with jaw harp joining in. Almost three minutes of refreshingly different an enjoyable scoring. A set of season five scoring would be incomplete without this cue.^
  • 41:06 in.^
  • 48:36 in.^

  • 19:29 in.^

    Highlights:
  • 1:01 in.^
  • :30 in.^
  • 7:50 in. Including funky material. I think the material heard during the airplane porn scene, might be tracked from a prior episode.^
  • 12:02 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^
  • 13:51 in. Moderately=paced funky cue with guiro.^
  • 18:40 in.^
  • 28:01 in.^
  • 31:31 in. Part of this cue might be tracked from "May the Horse Be with You".^
  • 33:57 in. Part of this cue might be tracked from "May the Horse Be with You".^
  • 36:33 in.^ *
  • 39:05 in.^

Another good effort. This score includes more of the refreshing and enjoyable southern-style cues.

    * = Man alive that is one hot blonde woman.

    "In Full Command" (final episode)

  • 8:09 in.^
  • 11:28 in.^

  • 20:56 in. And the cue after the commercial break, which sounds more like something you'd expect to hear in "Vega$".^
  • 25:57 in.
  • 28:53 in. And the source cue which immediately follows it, which I think has not only been used before, but may have originally been a score cue in a prior episode. And the cue after the commercial break.^ *
  • 35:23 in.^
  • 38:45 in.^
  • 43:59 in.^
  • 48:33 in.^

While this was the last series episode, there were some TV movies afterwards, and they will be forthcoming.

    * = In real life any guy who stop their yapping and ravage her.

    (NtM: 17:50)

I had to mention this: we almost got to see Kojak in the theaters. From the wikipedia page for the show, comes this interesting bit of trivia which I wish had happened:
David and Leslie Newman's original script for Superman: The Movie featured a cameo appearance by Savalas as Kojak, with Superman mistaking him for Lex Luthor and accidentally capturing him. This scene was written out of the film after Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewicz became involved and shifted the film towards a less campy and more serious tone.[16]

By: Barry De Vorzon and Joseph Conlan (in that order)

    Highlights:
  • 12:05 in.^
  • 16:17/43:59/52:29 in.^
  • 26:40 in.^
  • 34:32 in. Assuming this is original music.

  • 1:23:11 in.^
  • 1:33:05 in.^

The score began off very weak with dated empty synth work for the first few cues, but recovered later. However, some dated synth sounds are still used and the score is still very inferior to Cacavas' work. But it's not so bad that it doesn't deserve anything released. I say about ten selected cues ought to do it.

    "The Price of Justice" (1987)
    By: Patrick Williams
    https://archive.org/embed/kojak-tv-movie-collection/S1+E2+The+Price+of+Justice.mp4

This is the only effort by Williams.

    Highlights:
  • 6:20 in.^
  • 25:12 in.
  • 33:00 in.^
  • 1:12:00/1:33:57 in.^

Unfortunately, back when the show was on the air, that would have still been on the trailing edge of Williams at his peak, but at this point I guess budgets were not what they used to be and as a result it's cheap synth-laden inferior work. I hate to say it, but none of this needs to be released.

The entire notion of this TV movie is that no mother kills her own children, which of course was not only false back then, but several times over it's been proven false after-the-fact. Just a decade or so ago -- for one example -- there was one that made the national news, where the mother was distraught over something, had both kids in the car, drove the car into a lake or some kind of body of water, and drowned her kids.

  • 1:19:41 in.^
  • 1:21:31/1:22:00 in.^
  • 1:32:04 in.^

Angie Dickinson guest stars. I bet she was quietly wondering in her head while doing this: How come Telly gets all these "Kojak" TV movies after his series ended, but I got none after "Police Woman" ended?

I was hoping for more than we actually got, with Cacavas' return. The score is mostly synth, with a -- for that time -- generic sax' use. At least one theme used in the show , makes a return. The action cues are mostly synths work with simple repeating ideas, which pale greatly in comparison to the action material in the show. I'd go as far as to say its lazy.
Not much of this score needs to be released, and -- quite frankly -- given the grand scheme of things with all the superior television scoring you could be hearing, it if never got released, it would be no loss of consequence. Maybe a 2CD set covering selections from the TV movies, would do it.

I having been skimming for score, so I don't know if this and the last two TV movies say what happened to the regulars on the show when Kojak was on the force.

    * = Man, that is one courteous cabbie. He stayed there after the guy fired multiple rounds into another man in cold blooded murder, walked back, and let him get back in.

  • 1:34:40 in.^

Man, just as bad as the first effort.

In the episodes one of the officers states he finds a safe, and Kojak asks the owner if he'd mind opening it. In real life a search warrant doesn't work that way. You have to specify the area to be searched, the items in relation to the crime to be found, and anything not in that but relevant, must be in plain view. Kojak would need a separate warrant to get into the safe, and the owner should know that. There are no exigent circumstances seen here to do otherwise.

    SEASON 2:

Somewhere during the season, the theme music was re-arranged. I'm not going to re-check every episode to find where. If somebody here catches when it changes, feel free to post it and I'll edit my post to make a note on the specific episode.

According to Wikipedia, the alternate arrangement of the theme music began with the sixth episode of the second season ("Slay Ride"), which was the 28th overall episode.

Wikipedia also notes that "Goldenberg's first Kojak theme had lyrics, written by Bill Dyer. The song, entitled We'll Make It This Time (Theme From Kojak) was performed by Sammy Davis Jr. on his 1976 album The Song And Dance Man." I like it.
